Howto: Find Groceries
The discussion of a Penn Quarter grocery store waxes and wanes on this blog. Store or not, the reality is that everyone has to eat. Chipotle has some mean tacos and Ruth’s Chris serves up juicy steaks but seven days a week of eating out will either bust your budget, your gut or both. Your mileage may vary depending on you’re residence’s location so we’ve picked the intersection of 7th and H Streets, NW, as the starting point for figuring out the distance to the neighborhood’s closest big stores. Here’s the rundown:
Giant Food (1414 8th St, NW (8th and O St, NW))
Shaw – 0.68 miles away
Safeway (401 M St, SW (4th and M St, SW))
Waterfront – 2.55 miles away
Trader Joe’s (1101 25th St, NW (Penn Ave and 25th St, NW))
West End – 1.86 miles away
Whole Foods (1440 P St, NW (14th and P St, NW))
Logan Circle – 1.12 miles away
Over the coming weeks, we’ll take a closer look at each store looking for the good, the bad and the ugly about each one. If you’ve got comments on any of these stores, leave a post or send them to the GPLiving inbox with the subject line “Groceries.” Shop on !

I think we’re talking in circles here. I’m not saying a car doesn’t make it easier to take spontaneous trips to a greasy spoon – of course it does. And of course a car is great for going on trips to Annapolis or wherever. My point is, instead of arguing for more cars in our community so we can go to other neighborhoods or states to eat half smokes, drink beers, and do groceries, we could have a better neighborhood and be better stewards of our environment, if we tried to get these businesses to move into our neighborhood. Why wouldn’t we want a vibrant, walkable community?
Andy, your ideas sound great and it is laudable that you are working on making them happen. Until the grocer and walkable community becomes a reality, however, I think many of us will continue to take occasional “car trips” and be responsible for marginal greenhouse gas emissions in so doing.

Anon 3:32 is right. The reason I’d want to keep a car is b/c I DO want to leave downtown sometimes. I have friends that live in Richmond, Philly, NYC, and parents a 6 hour drive away near WNY. Certainly a Zipcar isn’t going to work for that, nor the price of renting cars, airfare or Amtrak going to be less than $200 a month.
DC is wonderful and a great place to be, but no one said just b/c you lived there you HAVE to stay in PQ 24/7.
