I visited the Safeway and thoguht it was impressive but I dont know if I'll be purchaing much fresh produce. Most looked fine but there were items that looked like they were very near expiration. Otherwise its great and the staff is friendly and helpful even if they dont know what an item is (prosciutto anyone?)

To clarify, I was the only customer at a counter manned by 3 people for the entire 15 minutes that I had to wait for my pound of turkey.

I have experienced wonderful service in other areas of the store though.

I agree with Paul. While, I've had nothing but success and speedy service at the deli counter, I've encountered other issues. Like, the cashier not 100% sure of what type of lettuce I was purchasing. It is nice to see motivated employees that are trying and learning. In a month or two, I'm sure those kinks will be worked out.

As to the number of patrons in the store, I have actually been pleasantly surprised with the number of people shopping in the store. It seems on par with places like the new Harris Teeter in Kalorama.

I'm loving that it's open until midnight, too. Most DC grocery stores close at 10pm and I like to shop late.

@lackadaisi - I hardly think the deli is the worst ever. Hyperbole much?

I went a couple times the first weekend. During my interaction with the deli the counter person did not know what 3/4 of a pound meant. These are the natural growing pains. This store has been started from scratch and is staffed mostly by members of our community. It will take time to educate employees. That may mean they don't yet know the answers to questions you ask? It may also mean that they don't yet have enough staff qualified to operate the slicers in the deli and must pre-slice.

What's important now is that the store infrastructure is outstanding. The entry level staff is courteous if not yet fully skilled. The management is also receptive to feedback.
