Zola Wine Update

Posted by Columbo
August 19, 2008

A brief update on Zola Wine, which we first wrote about in March of this year.  We are hoping to have more information in the coming weeks.  The public hearing dates have passed and the notices have come down.  The building permit however offers some interesting clues.

We’ve seen the inside of this location a few times, lots of interior construction going on right now.  One of the workers we talked to could confirm (granted this seems pretty obvious) that it will be a wine store, but no idea on when it would open.

This permit shows the owners as KEG Associates LLC.  We checked with the DCRA and there is a KEG Associates 1 LLC registered to do business in DC (it is incorporated in DE) but we can’t find anything so far about its holdings.  Do they also own restaurant Zola?

One of the more interesting updates on this permit is the metion of a 38 seat restaurant.  Again we wonder about any connection to restaurant Zola.

Could this be a wine shop like Best Cellers or DeVinos?  Or will this actually be a wine shop & restaurant combo?  We’ll post more information as our investigation continues.

Zola (the restaurant) is owned by the Star Restaurant Group. There is a link on their Web site to their owners. I work above the restaurant, I’ll see if I can corner someone about Zola Wine.

Well, well, well. A on-line search for “zola wine” returned the following:

http://www.forresterconstruction.com/news_204.html

Forrester Construction has been awarded the Zola Wine Store and Test Kitchen

Washington, DC – July 8, 2008 – Forrester Construction has been awarded the Zola Wine Store and Test Kitchen on 9th Street, NW in Washington, DC. This project will involve a 3,000 SF interior build-out for a new wine store and test kitchen. The test kitchen will be used for training of Zola restaurant staff, cooking classes, private parties, etc.

High end finishes and features include wood flooring, ceramic wall tile, custom millwork, stone and concrete countertops, custom wine rack systems and a wine wall with “spy” holes. The Owner is
Star Restaurant Group of Washington, DC and the Architect is Adamstein & Demetriou of Washington, DC. Construction is scheduled to take four months.

Nice detective work Frank!

Comment by Frank From Virginia on August 19, 2008 @ 2:07 pm

Thank you. I peeked in the window and several piles/parts of building supplies were marked “Forrester”, adding to the reliability of the story.

If most of the Forrester press release is true, this should be a nice place to get to know. Cooking classes and private party room would be a nice addition to Penn Quarter.

This is fantastic news! E Street seems to be coming along, and it’s nice to see this kind of investment in the neighborhood.

Comment by Frank From Virginia on August 20, 2008 @ 1:38 pm

Good one Devroul.

I found a Web site for the restaurant, but my Flash at work won’t let me in. I’ll try the Web site: http://www.seirestaurant.com/ at home.

More gumshoe later…

we checked out the websites for both Ray and Sei. they’re both linked off of Oya’s website. nothing but a splash screen (no pun intended) and no opening dates listed other than 2008. if we find anything more, we’ll let you know.

Frank from Virginia, #8 – please e-mail us at pqliving [at] gmail.com if you learn anything more. thanks!

Will do. I thought to call Perry’s and ask him. I’m building up the nerve.

Some info on Ray and Sei can be found here:

Comment by Anon on August 20, 2008 @ 6:09 pm

The latest update at Metrocurean Extras list Fall 2008 for Sei and Winter 2008 for Ray. I think both have liquor license hearing coming up in the next several weeks. Not a lot more info, but promising.

Also any word on Vapiano? It looked like there were deliveries to building last week.

Comment by mike@555mass on August 20, 2008 @ 11:39 pm

I spoke with someone today who works for Vapiano and was told that they would open this October. We will see…..

Comment by gpliving on August 21, 2008 @ 12:06 am

Thanks Mike! We can definitely attest to the progress being with construction of the Vapiano building on H St. It has come a long way since a few months ago when it was still missing cinder block walls!

For folk that are near to upcoming Panera Bread, any word on it’s opening date? Horray Panera I need a non chopped salad and a hunk of fresh bread; not that boring Chop’t anemic roll that I throw away.
