We thought this sign outside of Penn Social (801 E ST NW) fit today perfectly. It is a nice day outside for the first time in forever, but we’re jealous of those who have the day off and get to enjoy some of it inside Penn Social. While the initial press over the switch from Riot Act to Penn Social wasn’t entirely favorable, over the winter this became one of our favorite sports bars in Penn Quarter. The ground level portion of Penn Social is nothing special and we had written the place off after a few visits. But Mrs Columbo was insistent on playing skeeball one day and that was when we first took in the underground portion of the bar.
Talk about entering another world, the underground space is cavernous with numerous games. Drinking games? Check. Arcade games? Check. Board games? Check, we think. Definitely if you count the giant Connect-Four and Jenga pieces. As you’d expect there are lots of big screen and projection TVs, a reasonable beer selection (with rotating micro-brews) that includes pitchers, and an overall feel-good vibe.
PQ now has three fun, game filled, gigantic basement sports bars (Rocket Bar, Iron Horse, and Penn Social) . We’ve enjoyed them all for different reasons (and during different seasons), but Penn Social is definitely our new favorite.

“Bring Back Riot Act”????
Are you the owner? The property manager? A promoter? A comedian?
No? Just a regular ol dude? Ok…great. Thanks for playing.
The Penn Social bar is fantastic. This dude DC Native is obviously a bitter fool who loves failing and incompetent businesses in his/her neighborhood. And I live here. Penn Quarter. I would know. Literally, that business was a mess.
Penn Social is packed EVERY weekend and EVERY afternoon for Happy Hour. That’s a successful neighborhood business.
Basically, if you boycott successful businesses, in your neighborhood, in the name of broken and bloated businesses, then you are not only a fool, but a serious jerk who deserves nothing short of being put in the very situation you relish.
Rocket Bar, Iron Horse, and Penn Social are all owned by the same person — or at least the managing partner is the same; I have no idea if the investors are the same.
I went to two comedy shows on the lower level when it was the Riot Act. both shows were almost full and very entertaining.
I’ve been to Penn Social once and it was well attended too. also entertaining.
FWIW.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

Riot Act was amazing and all the people that worked there were incredibly professional and friendly. I boycott penn social. Riot Act is the best, was the best, and helped make our neighborhood better, unique and special. It reminded me of this neighborhood’s quality/uniqueness of entertainment from the 9:30 days.
i’ll go to the grocery store before I’ll buy a beer from penn social. just another bar. We need comedy. BRING BACK RIOT ACT!!!!
