POW-MIA Trailers Lose Prime Real Estate
Jogging on the Mall one morning we noticed that with the construction underway for the new Vietnam War Memorial Visitors Center, the POW-MIA trailers had disappeared. These are the booths that were between the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool.
We spoke to a park ranger who said the booths had been moved farther down the Mall. We followed his directions but only found one of them, near Constitution Ave & 20th ST. Still one the Mall, and still very close to the Wall. But nowhere near as prominently displayed as they once had been.

The current construction is for a security system for the Lincoln Memorial.
The Vietnam visitor center will be in the triangle park area bordered by Henry Bacon Drive, 23rd street, and Constitution Avenue. This is west of the Vietnam Memorial. Construction has not yet begun. A map of the center is at this link:

LINCOLN MEMORIAL
Plaza to Receive Security Upgrade
The National Park Service said yesterday that starting Tuesday, it will close part of the plaza on the east side of the Lincoln Memorial as part of a security project.
The area, between the Reflecting Pool and the monument, will be partially cordoned off with fencing while utilities, pavement and protective posts are installed. Pedestrian access to the memorial will maintained at all times, the park service said.
The project is scheduled to be done by January.

Simply a desecration of a beautiful piece of art [the Wall] based on pandering to cretins.
Article in the NY Times today about the bike-sharing program here – it has to be subsidized because it does not make financial sense. Subsidizing social programs is fine with me, b/c I’m a socialist, but where are all the capitalists?
The NY Times reports “the European programs would cost about $4,500 per bike if sponsors did not step in”. Sponsors = Clear Channel = “free” advertisements on bus shelters = loss of revenue to DC = money out of taxpayer pockets. So we’re paying $4,500 per bike – say 1000 bikes someday – that’s just four million five hundred thousand dollars – probably each year, although the article does not specify.
