The Bus As The Preferred Mode Of Travel
This is the first time we’ve ever seen the new BoltBus service have a line more than about 10 people deep. Friday afternoon around 2 pm we caught a line a block long waiting to board this NY bound bus. Sure Memorial Day weekend probably played a big role here, but we wondered if there were other issues at play.
Only time will tell, but is the high cost of gas, higher airline charges & fees, and the fact that a ticket on the BoltBus is a tenth the cost of Amtrak helping the bus to be more popular with travelers?

That was me waiting in line. I was worried that there were way too many people than a bus could hold, but Bolt Bus wound up sending 3 buses, and everyone got a seat.
I rode the Boltbus for the first time on Friday, fortunately at 1:30. Fast, easy, cheap travel to NYC and back. I cannot recommend it highly enough, so long as the buses stay clean and modern.
It’s too bad that those of us who go south often don’t have this option. can we get a little DC>RICHMOND>RALEIGH>CHARLOTTE>ATLANTA love!
That’s a great point number 4, and I’d add to that going East & West as well. Seriously. We live about 3 hours from both a bunch of beaches and ski resorts, yet the only way to get to any of these (easily & reliably) is by car.
While in Portugal recently I was amazed to be able to take the metro (metro!) to within a mile of a public beach. The hour long ride was just as cheap as you expect a metro ride to be (under $5 US) and the walk to the beach was very pleasant with shop lined streets & parks the entire way.
Now I know Porto is a little closer to the Ocean than DC, so I don’t expect our metro to run all that way. But I still believe a lot of people would opt for rapid bus transit (or even better, rail) to the beach or mountains during their seasons if that option were available.
Columbo, if you are looking to go to Rehoboth, try http://www.rehobus.com/
Round trip $78 As long as you don’t mind the gay party scene on the bus it’s a great way to travel. There are folks who just take advantage of the WIFI and keep to themselves.

Two weeks ago I was in a huge group waiting for a BoltBus. That was mostly because the 9AM bus never showed and we all had to wait for the 11AM bus. And no, those electronic updates never happened, and the 11AM driver had no clue what happened.
