All Roads Lead To Washington

Posted by Columbo

Or so we’re beginning to think.  There is yet another bus company throwing their hat into the ring, megabus service started on Friday in DC, and it picks up at the same corner (11th & G NW) as the BoltBus we’ve written about before.

The side of the bus advertises many cities, but if you’re departing from DC, New York is the only destination they offer.  If you’re departing from NY, you have a wider range of destinations including but not limited to Boston & Toronto.

Just like BoltBus, prices are low (as cheap as $1.50) and the DC to NY bus caters to us short attention spanners with wifi as well.  On the megabus website the only bus amenity listed is bathrooms (we don’t debate the importance of that feature), so we don’t know if wifi is available on all the routes.

We’re all for more competition and better transit options, but is 11th & G becoming the new DC bus terminal?

looks like megabus has service in the west, the midwest, Canada and the UK too!

While its a great convenience, I am not sure I love the trend of “create your own bus stop”.

The problem is that the existing DC bus station is a national disgrace. Ideally the pickup and drop off site for these buses would be Union Station, which is a few blocks closer to New York as well.

You know PQResident, I noticed that but thought it was strange that (unless I’m missing something) you can’t take their service from one region to the next. So there is no getting to Chicago from New York via megabus. I wonder if that will be the next step if the service catches on?

Agree with #2 that, while convenient, the create-your-own-stop free for all can’t last forever. Can’t help but notice that BoltBus’s website says, “Our bus will use the designated bus stop [at 11th & G]”. Have they cleared that with anyone? What about the regular city buses who need access to that stop during the 10-20 minutes the BoltBus is loading? Presumably the $1 tickets don’t leave much for a revenue-sharing agreement with WMATA…

I see that CNN had a story (video) about megabus today.

Nice work Columbo – you beat CNN to the presses!

actually megabus is supposed to drop off and pick up at Union Station. They will only be at 11th & G until June 6.

I’d actually prefer they would stay where they are now because its much easier and closer for me to get to.

Last night (June 4) the Megabus was loading in bus parking at Union Station.

Megabus has preferred parking closest to the escalators. Closer than Martz or even the red Circulator bus. This is most certainly a better bus stop since they don’t block the streets. Whatmore, the passengers have a protected area to wait.

Now if Union Station management would just clean up the bus parking area. A few benches that don’t look like WWII leftovers would be nice. What is with the construction materials that we have been walking around now for four years? Also the Union Station bus parking attendants would benefit from some customer service training.

Megabus offers another legitimate transportation option to NYC, Philly, and Boston just as BoltBus. Both companies are subsidiaries of Stagecoach PLC and FirstGroup PLC respectively and have outstanding operations in the UK and North America. Travelling by PeterPan, Greyhound, or these new bus lines remains the safest mode of transportation compared to the gypsy lines such as the Chinese, Vamoose, or DC2NY.

Looks like megabus is still picking up at 11th & G, at least as of this weekend. I’ve seen several megabuses at that stop so far today (Saturday).

The megabus website has notes for those leaving DC to check which stop your bus leaves from. So I guess they’re using both Union Station and 11th & G for the time being.
