Coppola Sighting In PQ
How do you solve a problem like Sofia? The problem? Not being able to find the damn things.
Last summer Mrs Columbo took a trip to Coeur d’Alene and while stocking up for a boat ride on the lake she discovered the small Sofia Mini cans of Blanc de Blanc from the Coppola winery. Mrs Columbo couldn’t wait for us to try them, little did we know just how long that wait would be. We asked about them at numerous liquor stores, and had a few false sightings at grocery stores and markets.
Finally, out of desperation, we took a trip across the border to the Total Wine in Alexandria. There we discovered they had 10 cans of Sofia available, we bought them all, and subsequently did a terrible job of rationing them. Once again we were on the hunt for Sofias.
Everything changed one wintry night at Graffiato (707 6th ST NW). While waiting for a couple of bar seats to open we were discussing whether we would opt for beer, wine, or the draft prosecco when we both spotted it at the same time: A Sofia in the wild! When we finally sat down at the bar we asked our bartender when they had added Sofia? We eat at Graffiato all the time and couldn’t believe they’d added the cans.
“We’ve always had Sofias,” was the response from our bartender.
Oh. We’ll take two.
We suppose that is the downside to always ordering the same thing at our favorite spots, we don’t give the menu a fair shake to see what new-old discoveries await. This new-found knowledge didn’t completely change our ways, we still ordered our usual: chicken liver mousse, porky’s revenge pizza. Baby steps.
We still haven’t found Sofia Mini’s at any retail stores, but we would be remiss if we didn’t call out Harris Teeter (1201 1st Street NE); they may not sell the Minis, but they do sell the full size Sofia Blanc de Blanc, a great sparkling wine for under $20.

Love these things. Foggy Bottom Whole Foods has them in the wine case upstairs by the coffee bar. Bought three four packs a few weeks ago!!
