Tea Partiers Cometh, Declare Penn Quarter Safe

Posted by gpliving
August 27, 2010

To our dear fellow Penn Quarter residents: You will be proud to know that the Penn Quarter has been declared a safe zone for Saturday’s Glenn Beck March on Washington. Also, one of our favorite Penn Quarter restaurant’s, Jaleo, is highlighted as nice (but pricey) restaurant that is also close to the National Mall.  That’s nice, considering that the author seems to heavily recommend that visitors stay and patronize establishments in northern Virginia.

While the unofficial guide to DC perpetuates many stereotypes, like avoiding all of the hipsters on the green line, we can’t lose sight of the likely intended audience of the guide: Tourists.

No, offense, but this is absolutely nothing to be proud of. It means the “tea party” thinks that the Penn Quarter is a neighborhood of homogeneous white people free of immigrants who may or may not be illegal, the homeless feeding off humanity and the welfare-supported poor.

Comment by Artisan Resident on August 27, 2010 @ 1:21 pm

Not to mention that for a first time visitor to DC, the recommended areas are actually pretty good recommended areas for things to do, things to see, and yes, safer places to be.

A lot of other DC bloggers have been making fun of the recommendations, but if my elderly parents were coming to visit, I wouldn’t recommend them going to Prince George’s or Anacostia either.

Comment by Linda on August 27, 2010 @ 3:08 pm

I agree with Eric. Getting the nod of approval from Glenn Beck followers is nothing to be “proud” of. Also, it is ridiculous to suggest that their directive to not ride the green or yellow line is a warning to avoid “hipsters.” I think everyone who has read the blog post knows what they’re warning about.

Comment by gpliving on August 27, 2010 @ 3:39 pm

Thanks Eric & Linda! Perhaps my sarcasm was a bit too subtle and misleading, but both of you are right on both counts.

Comment by Linda on August 27, 2010 @ 3:54 pm

Thanks for that-I was wondering if you were joking. As sarcasm, it’s funny.

This PQ dweller is leaving town for the weekend rather than suffer the tea baggers. I encountered them on several occasions when they were here to protest health care reform and they were the scariest and most disturbing mob I’ve encountered in my 30+ years of living in DC. I believe in the First Amendment, and I’m also glad I have the option of getting out of here when such an ugly bunch comes to town.

Comment by Urbaniste on August 27, 2010 @ 7:07 pm

I have not read the blog, nor clicked on any of the links, but off the top of my head I thought that maybe they meant Jaleo in Northern VA, — there is one in Crystal City — and got confused when they said Penn Quarter. — Aren’t they continually mixing up their facts?

Comment by Urbaniste on August 27, 2010 @ 7:18 pm

Hey, you guys focused on Jaleo, but the blog also said don’t stay at hotels here, it’s not safe by giving the following instructions:

If on foot or in a cab or bus, stay in . . . or in DC only in northwest DC west (i.e. larger street numbers) of 14th or 16th streets.

Someone isn’t reading all the way through; for hotels or at night, we’re on the don’t stop here, it isn’t safe list, I guess, but you can eat here if you are hungry. Didn’t I say they can’t get their facts — read think — straight?

If you see these people…you’ll know the Tea Partiers are among us here in PQ. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLni3wbndls

Dear Anonymous – just think – You scare Them too. That’s why they’re here.

Comment by pqworker on August 27, 2010 @ 8:25 pm

“Dupont Circle, gay area” LOL!

I hope they can’t figure out 295 and the BW parkway. I need to pick someone up at BWI on Saturday afternoon.

Comment by steve on August 27, 2010 @ 9:05 pm

hmmm….. I for one and some other PQ Residents will be happy to see and join Glenn Beck on the Mall.

This is kind of funny, considering I found this site while trying to find out something (anything) about the ruckus in front of the Verizon Center from 2:15-3:30am on Friday Aug 27. Nine police cars + ambulance – it seemed pretty intense. i saw some fighting from my apartment and maybe some police intervention (taser?). Does anyone know what happened? I scoured the internet out of curiosity, but not a word anywhere.

I just moved here & otherwise like the area.

Comment by Mel on August 28, 2010 @ 9:43 am

ridiculous.. wait until they see me with my mixed-race family, raising 2 small children in the city… idiots…

Comment by Rob on August 28, 2010 @ 10:42 am

@Steve-
Have fun. And say heil to Glenn for me.

Comment by rmu on August 29, 2010 @ 9:44 am

Maybe spending the weekend in this multi-cultural, multi-ethnic city will open these visitors’ eyes to how wonderful and beautiful diversity is. (Eternal optimist, I know…..)

Comment by DCer on August 29, 2010 @ 9:47 pm

This is a pretty insipid post, considering the blatant bigotry of the Beck rally. This basically all-white rally assault on our city with the racist steering of people away from areas of color of our city is disgraceful. I’m sorry that gpliving sees humor in this, because racism is not funny or anything to be to be taken lightly.

Get serious, gpliving; your community has been denigrated.

Comment by Anonymous on August 30, 2010 @ 9:45 am

Yes, it was a weekend of rallies lead by a pair of lunatics — Glenn Beck and Al Sharpton.

A.K. – my guess is that the fight in front of the Verizon Center did not involve Tea Party members, nor did last week’s beating on the green line at L’enfant Plaza or the recent teen brawl that started at Gallery Place.

Comment by pqnonymous on August 30, 2010 @ 9:46 am

@DCer –

Lighten up, Francis.

Comment by Anonymous on August 30, 2010 @ 1:49 pm

I wish the rally would have pinpointed the real issue that most Republican’s are having trouble keeping quiet about these days:

The Budget

As I watch Govies fall asleep at their desk, on the metro, and generally just become a zombie like puddle in the nations Capital. I am glad a rally organized, and in such numbers, now they just need to refine their message.

Shame on Washingtonian’s who make make a career and life off of wasteful spending, layers of bureaucracy, and afternoon naps.

If only everyone could behave like our routine weekend visitors that organize around the McDs and terrorize passerbys. Damn the tea partiers!

Comment by a.k. on August 31, 2010 @ 10:24 am

@Comment by Anonymous on August 30, 2010 @ 9:45 am

I know that those fights didn’t involve Tea Partiers. I was just curious as to what happened & couldn’t find a police blotter report about it. I would have commented on a more appropriate post, but one wasn’t to be found.
