"Free Ride" Taken For A Ride At Hooters Restaurant (825 7th St NW) + Spotlight In The Sky?

Posted by gpliving
April 30, 2007

The team at Read Express’ Free Ride found themselves reservation-less and hungry just after the NBA game on Saturday. After a couple of failed attempts at other restaurants, they settle on Hooters. But, the ability to get a table in the restaurant may have been indicative of the adventure they were about to have.

On another note: Did anyone notice the Batman spotlight distress call in the sky on Saturday? (no, it didn’t actually have a Batman logo – just a light) We think the light machine was placed on 8th & G St NW, which is next to the future home of Proof wine bar (a grand opening?). The only other thing it could be is a special event at the Smithsonian, or something at IndeBleu. We’ll try to figure this out later today.

I figured it was for the NBA playoffs.

Just tried calling Proof and no one picks up (it eventually goes to a generic Verizon voicemail box with no phone number associated with it).

It was probably for the NBA game, like you said.

I don’t think so. We live at the Clara Barton and we saw the same thing late summer. Perhaps it is a promo thing for the clubs? or the movie theater?

Comment by gpliving on April 30, 2007 @ 1:21 pm

Well, it was an odd place for anything related to 7th St. The light was either on 8th or 9th and between G & H.

The two clubs are on F St and the movie theater is between 6th & 7th.

The one time the movie theater had lights like that, they put the lights on 6th St at the gallery place parking garage entrance.

I don’t know abopt the lights, but the signage for Bar Louie was going up today at 7th and G (under the Lucky Strike and Regal Theaters signs).

Also it looks like there is a tenant for 901 7th street(the old Marlow building) — there are signs saying a Commere Bank is going in.

Great news! I am looking forward to getting a lot of shopping done at Commerce Bank. Those huge plate glass windows will be ideal to display all the desks, plants, and bulletproof glass CB has to show off!

But seriously, in the midst of my devastation about Eastern Market this morning, it occurred to me that all those vendors will either have to close up shop or relocate while the market is restored. Making F Street between 9th & 10th into a “gourmet row” probably never seemed more possible…

I like that last idea! Maybe you plant that seed in the mind of the Mayor, who has been so vocal about helping people rebuild. We are in the heart of the city and allow easy access to everyone from all Metro lines.

Sure, it would be nice to just take the vendors from Eastern Market and plop them down in some sort of “gourmet row,” but there is a reason they were in Eastern Market to begin with. There is no way those vendors would pay the rents on F street or on 7th street or in any other areas of our neighborhood that have been redeveloped. I don’t think mom and pop butchers and ethnic delis are high on developers’ lists of prospective tenants.

tjm: Actually mom and pop retail *is* high on developers’ lists of prospective tenants for F St. One of the developers said that they could have already filled F St three times over with restaurants.

gpliving: That doesn’t surprise me, but I’m not arguing retail mix, I’m talking about economics. There’s a difference between high-end shops like Cowgirl Creamery or Coup de Foudre and the vendors in Eastern Market. One of the factors that has slowed down the development of more and better retail in our neighborhood is the high rents demanded by developers in new/redeveloped buildings. While developers on F st. may want “mom and pop” stores, they are looking for a mom and pop with significantly greater means than the Eastern Market vendors.

tjm: excellent point!
