Penn Quarter Gains One More Sidewalk! (6th & F St NW)
The beautiful building at the corner of 6th & F St will house the Harman Center for the Arts – an expanded stage for the Shakespeare Theater.
Ever since construction began on the building, the sidewalk on the western side of 6th St had been closed (along the side with the victorian building seen in the first pic). A few days ago, the fence disappeared and we have our sidewalk back!

That’s Great. Now when will we get out sidewalk back next to the Reynolds Center/National Portrait Gallery on 7th Street?
Why can’t developers work above the sidewalks like they do in New York??? That has alway perplexed me?
I agree. It seems hit or miss – some developers create the nice covered walk through corridor while others just fence off the whole thing and say “use the other side of the street.”
Love it! And I echo others’ comments about the 7th Street sidewalk, and developers building scaffolding while they work above.
I moved into the neighborhood in 2001 and I think the Portrait Gallery sidewalk was already closed then. It’s definitely been closed since at least 2003. I thought we would finally get some relief when the Gallery opened, but no such luck. It’s a mystery why it’s still closed (can’t they at least let us have a foot or two to squeeze by?), but I’d love to know if anybody has info. on why it’s still closed and when it will reopen.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Looks like a lovely building!
