Pennsylvania Avenue, circa 1905 (pic)
This cool photo was shot in 1905 and looks southeast down Penn Ave towards the Capitol. Can you spot the buildings that are still standing today?

The buildings on the left were eventually merged into a single Kann’s department store, which in the 1960s was covered in a hideous aluminum vertical siding. It burned down in a mysterious fire.
Love the little flecks of horse manure on Penn Ave. If we were to trade places with people in the photo, we wouldn’t be able to stand their stink and they wouldn’t be able to stand our noise.
not many know about the Temperance Fountain. good show Tim! we plan to do a separate post on the monuments and such in the area.

For a while the PNC Bank building was a liquor store. Slightly ironic; it sits next to the Temperance Fountain near 7th Street.
