Polly Esther’s To Have Its "Last Dance"
It finally had to happen…demolition started on the buildings lining the north side of F Street between 11th and 12th. GP Living speculates that Polly Esther’s, a long running Washington DC dance spot at 605 12th Street, where you could Shake Your Groove Thing, do the Safety Dance and get Back In Black will soon have its Last Dance and be reduced to rubble. It will join the Washington dance club Hall of Fame along with Club Zei (Zei Alley), the Spy Club (also in Zei Alley) and The Bayou (Georgetown).

Another one bites the dust, eventually there will be only 4 places for night entertainment(Clubs). Georgetown, Waaaaaay out on New York Ave, Dupont Circle, and (*SIGH*) Adams Morgan..
I’m sure Home and Platinums days are numbered..
Wow…i’m impressed that others remember great times at Spy and Zei. The good ‘ole days of DC clubbing! And why can’t they bring back Air at the Reagan Center International Trade Center? Given great summer weather, that was THE place to be 2 summers ago.
Not so sure about Home and Platinum. Those are beautiful buildings, and they’ve been clubs forever, in one incarnation or another.
yes, it’s true. PQResident is old school and remembers nights at the Fifth Column, Decades and Cities too. the upstairs “room” at Cities is now a couple of condos above the Left Bank restaurant.
I can’t say that it’s much of a loss. It was never a particularly hip or fun club, but once upon a time Polly Esther’s was at least a semi-ok place to dance if you just wanted silly fun.
For the past several years, however, it’s been just horrible. They carved up the club–ostensibly to allow for hosting more private parties–and what used to be a three level club turned into a crap shoot on guessing which floor would be open and which music genre would actually be playing on any given night. It’s like they desperately wanted the place to fail.
If folks want to get their 80s groove on, there’s always Heaven & Hell on Thursdays night, or Mousetrap (once a month) at Black Cat.

And don’t forget State of the Union. Are there any good places in or near the neighborhood to go dancing?
