Summer Sips: Guacamole Standoff
In the past week, we have enjoyed Happy Hours at Todd English’s new gourmet Mexican restaurant, MXDC (600 14th St., NW), and at our long-standing favorite, Oyamel (401 7th St., NW). Margaritas and guacamole are the perfect remedy to these hot, hot days.
Having grown up in a family known to have guacamole contests, we were intrigued by the buzz about a guacamole menu being offered at MXDC. We tried the Paloma cocktail, guacamole with crab, pork belly tacos, and tuna ceviche with watermelon. By far, the ceviche was the best dish with a bright balance of hot peppers and sweet watermelon. Unfortunately, the guacamole didn’t have much wow factor and somewhat resembled the pre-made stuff you find in the grocery store in consistency and flavor.
The margaritas and table-side guacamole at Oyamel continue their reign. Of note, the Mexicana Gin & Tonic is also tops on the Summer Sips list.
