Tamburlaine Back Up And Running
The Shakespeare Theatre let us know that after a brief cessation of performances of Tamburlaine due to an injury to Avery Brooks, the lead for the production, the show is back on and will resume with tomorrow’s 8 pm performance. Edward II, running concurrently with Tamburlaine, was not affected and both productions run until January 6, 2008 at the Sidney Harman Hall at 610 F Street, NW.

Tamburlaine was fantastic. My girlfriend and I went to see it several weeks ago at the Shakespeare theater across from the Verizon Center and were quite impressed. Then again real estate does keep me in the office more than it should.
Either way I have nothing but great things to say about the show.
When I saw Tamburlaine, the weekend before the injury, the theater was packed.
It’s important to remember that this is more pageant rather than a single story, as was typical 400 years ago. The cast does an impressive job and Avery Brooks’ performance is incredible.
It’s Marlowe and not Shakespeare. A friend described it best — the Marlowe plays were loosely connected scenes rather than an overall story — more like watching episodic television rather than a movie.
I think the decision to cancel rather than use the replacement understudy had to do with the limited time to learn a sizable and challenging role rather than any attendance issues.
As always, YMMV.

Honestly, Tamburlaine was incredibly overrated. Avery Brooks is magnificent, in Othello earlier at WSC, DS9 etc. But this show was all costumes and no heart. From what I have seen in the neighborhood attendence has also been underwhelming, so it makes sense to cancel rather than play to a nearly empty house with a 2nd understudy.
