Trashcans: Not In Gallery Place!
We feel obligated to post this WaPo story about trashcans, not only because it deals with our neighborhood, but because our friend, Miles Groves (president of the residents association at the Cosmopolitan) is quoted several times! Hi Miles!
- The new condominiums sprouting in the Penn Quarter/Chinatown neighborhood have lured thousands of residents to downtown Washington in recent years. But some charge that city services have not kept pace with the burgeoning population.
Exhibit A: the disturbing lack of public trash cans.

I have to disagree.. Ive lived in Chinatown for several years and i think the police are very present, compared to the rest of the city! I feel much safer than when i was in Georgetown or Adams Morgan.. The trash has always been picked up regularly while ive been here..AND the street cleaners even come around regularly
Ive lived in other parts of the city, and while the homeless do leave a mess in the alley sometimes…i cant tell you how many times “students” puked or “relieved themselves” on my door in Georgetown.. as for trash cans..ive always been amazed at how often the ones there get emptied.. I think folks just need to realize that Chinatown is in THE downtown area in a major metropolitian city and it is just NOT gonna be “reston town center” and personally i say “THANK GOODNESS”!!!
Did anyone see the marching band playing down D Street last night? What was that all about? It was totally random but I enjoyed the absurdity of it all.
i saw it.. it happens fairly regulary! just a little bonus you get living here!
private parades! I think it is related to a music/band program at a church / community center up past the convention center
I am not impressed by Anonymous trying to compare safety to Adams Morgan. Not a good example by most standards. We should aspire to be a great world-class city and a great neighborhood, and not settle for comparing ourselves to Adams Morgan or Georgetown.
And we don’t need to go to insult each other with comparing the nieghborhood to sanitized extremes like Reston Town Center.
I see the neighborhood as at a constant tipping point, and the job of the city and residents is to keep the neighborhood tipped towards unique, uran, downtown, and metropolitan and not something people want to avoid. So, if you consider the tipping point perspective, asking for trash cans and occassional early morning patrols now is a step away from having to ask for the gang task force.
I think the point about all of these issues (police presence, trash, etc) is that 6th street can be a different world away from the busy part of 7th street around the Verizon Center.
Hopefully the new buildings (777 6th and the one across the street) will help improve the area – especially with ground floor retail.

Way to go Miles! I feel for those folks on Sixth Street, who have 777 being built, and will have a bujilding going up across the street (backside of Gallery Place). The developer should also step up to keep the area clean, because they are making a mess doing construction.
I have headr from some ANC that the bodega on Sixth and H is a problem and they have been pushing to have something done- they mostly sell single servings of liquor, which is a detriment to the neighborhood. The local liquor control boards should be brought in with nuisance complaints, because they can take action.
Some more trash cans would be good – maybe BID can get them if the city can’t. One thing to consider is that Public Works has recently been picking up trash in the middle of the night, which is actually prohibited in our neighborhood. So, please pass the word that the trash cans should not be emptied at night so folks can get some sleep at night.
