8th Street To Get Striped (Pic)
It happened in the 80s and it will happen again in the 00s. 8th Street will be “striped” in association with the Colorfield remix project that runs this April to July. The Color Field art movement emerged in the 1950s and 1960s with abstract paintings containing large swaths of color on the canvas; Mark Rothko is one of the most famous artists of the genre with his paintings appearing in museums worldwide. Gene Davis, who taught at the Corcoran, is DC’s local color field artist done good and the 8th Street project will be an homage to his work. A black tie charity event, museum exhibits at all the big name halls, workshops and lectures all will happen in conjunction with the project – the schedule of events is citywide.
Ed. Note (4/24/2015): A great resource on Color Field painting is available at Artsy which has its own Color Field homepage!

This is going to be wonderful. I going to really love this. just happened to finish reading a biography on art critic Clement Greenberg, a real advocate for this group of artists especially Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis.
not entirely sure about when the street will be painted but to maximize the time in effect, they’ll have to do it in April. it would be very cool if they left it that way for a while beyond the exhibit timeframe.

The Corcoran College of Art & Design has a Gene Davis class running from 4/14/2007 – 5/5/2007 (4 Saturday classes). I wonder if 8th will be striped during those four weeks by the class?
