DNA Meeting Tomorrow Night *updated*

Posted by pqresident
September 15, 2008

The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) meeting will take place tomorrow on Tuesday, September 16th in Calvary Baptist Church’s Kendall Hall. Use the entrance at 755 8th Street NW on the east side of 8th Street NW between G and H Streets.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 pm with refreshments and a safety report update from 101W Metro DC police officers, Lt. Durand and Captain Cummings, to include 7th Street and north of Eye Street. This will be followed by an hour long panel of citizens running for election as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner of a Single Member District.

So far, five six have agreed to be on the panel including Commissioner Mike Bernardo running for reelection in ANC 2F06, Jessica Lanza who is running against Commissioner Doris Brooks in ANC 2C03, Doris Brooks the ANC2C03 incumbent (Brooks has not responded to an invitation to participate) and three incumbents from ANC 6C Commissioner Charles Docter, Commissioner Mark Dixon and Commissioner Keith Silver. The initial discussion will center on their vision for our Downtown Neighborhood and what challenges or opportunities exist.

Ed. Note: ANC Commisioner attendance mentioned above is based on a notice distributed by the DNA the morning of September 15. on September 10. New developments may have occurred since then.

Hey…the scuttlebutt is that Doris was asked if she was planning on attending by one of the Shaw folks and she said yes. I highly doubt she will bother (or rephrase that Leroy will let her) but it may be a very interesting meeting tomorrow evening.

Maybe they will discuss why approximately 10 cop cars had to come streaking down 7th Street at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night to address an incident happenning in the alley leading to the movie theater. Hundreds of people were running from the scene including close to 20 gang bangers with their shirts off who were screaming profanity at the cops. The cops were trying to do their job but were way outnumbered.

That area continues to get progressively worse every weekend night and appears to be turning into a hangout for teen gangs. I dread to hear about the day when those gangs bring their guns and open fire.

DNA sent her a letter and Miles Grove followed up with a telephone call. Commissioner Brooks confirmed that she would attend. Whether she actually honors her commitment will not be known until the meeting. We hope that it is an interesting meeting.

I hope the safety discussion presents a strategy for addressing the disruptive crowds converging every weekend night outside the 7th street movie theaters. I think there was some type of serious fight there this past Saturday night.

Please please come to this forum tonight! This ANC election is so very important! I’m glad Commissioner Brooks is coming. Last election season in 2006, MVSNA invited her to our own debate and she rudely refused saying that she has been an ANC Commissioner for 30 years and she didnt have to come to our meeting. For the last 2 years we have been stuck with a dysfunctional & deadlocked ANC 2C with 2 sedentary Commissioners (Brooks & Curtis) essentially run by Leroy Thorpe, an unelected ANC 2C representative. Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans & our government dont care and wont fix this problem. This is NOT acceptable. We need to all get involved and remedy this at the ballot box.

There are brawls there virtually every weekend night, but most people on this blog aren’t concerned about the crime here, & ridicule the notion that walking to the new Safeway at night could be dangerous.
It seems most people who live in DC for a while eventually accept the failures of the city: corrupt government wasting tax dollars in $50 million increments, cops that do nothing except protect VIPs, etc. I’ve lived here about fifteen years & still don’t understand why the law-abiding citizens [the vast majority in all parts of town] accept violent crime & worthless police as a “cost of living” in the city.

#7, “Most people on this blog aren’t concerned about the crime here, & ridicule the notion that walking to the new Safeway at night could be dangerous”? The “vast majority” of citizens “accept violent crime & worthless police as a ‘cost of living’ in the city”?

Whatever points you’re try to make were just lost upon me, because such extreme generalizations completely lack rationalization. I’ve lived in the city for almost five years now and have worked in this city for over 20; I don’t subscribe to your worldview about living here and and don’t know a single person who does. Not one.

And if you really believed this stuff, why the hay are you still living here? Don’t you realize that you have other choices? Or are you just enjoying your misery?

Comment by Believer on September 17, 2008 @ 10:44 am

#10, I think you were attempting to respond to #8, not #7. I see exactly what #7 was saying and know many people who are just as apathetic about DC police and government services in general. Obviously, complaining on this blog is relatively worthless so everyone who wants change, needs to attend these local meetings and vote.

Comment by Si Kailian on September 17, 2008 @ 12:20 pm

I also want to point out that voter turnout in the sept 9th primary was abominable. you all have til OCTOBER 6th to register for the general election – boee.dc.gov (you can also check your registration status there too)

We have precious few voting rights in DC, we MUST exercise them whenever possible!!

Comment by CityLiving on September 17, 2008 @ 9:38 pm

si Kailan, my apologies; my comment above was directed to #8, not to you (of all people!). Thanks for pointing this out, Believer, and you make a valid point. Complaining on a blog is worthless; people need to get out and in front of their elected and appointed officials. The DNA has brought about some important changes, This is only possible by a supporting membership and involved people.

@2, not sure how you know about this unless you were actually there. If you were, you’re a brave (maybe reckless) soul. IMHO, anyone who lives in the area (hence is in a position to know better) that ventures on 7th Street after dusk is brave (maybe reckless) or just plain crazy.

The young punks rule 7th Street. It was gang bangers who ruined the theaters at Union Station (out of business now) and it’s only a matter of time before they have accomplished this at the Regal Theaters, not to mention the nearby businesses. Give it some time and that area will be known as Shooting Gallery Place. It won’t be long.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
