More Retail Space Confirmations ("Most Wanted" Museum, NLEOA Museum, Chopt Replaces Marvelous Market)

Posted by gpliving

Otavio wrote in to let us know the following exciting info:

Washington Business Journal (WBJ), in its latest edition, reported on some substantial retail news for the neighbourhood. They confirmed that the producers of “America’s Most Wanted” have signed a lease to open a 20,000 square foot museum in Terrell Place at 575 Seventh Street, NW, the former Body Smith space. Timing of the museum opening is uncertain.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Association, housed in the AARP building, is planning to open a 90,000 square foot museum in 2011.

WBJ also confirmed that the recent Marvelous Market closing was the result of a buyout. Douglas Development closed Marvelous Market so they could put another tenant in the 1,800 square foot space. Chopt, a New York-based salad restaurant, is opening in place of Marvelous Market by late spring or early summer. Chopt will serve sandwiches, but its main draw, WBJ says, will be a salad bar where chefs use a double-bladed knife that is round and rocks on cutting boards to chop off vegetables quickly. Chopt has 3 locations in New York.

Thanks Otavio!

LOVE Chopt — have been to one in NYC — a little pricey for a salad, but a good, fresh alternative to some 7th streets offerings.

Glad it’s not a Popeye’s!! This “America’s Most Wanted” museum sounds amusing. Not what I would have picked, but then again I’m not signing leases for 20K square feet downtown. Wonder if the developers of Terrell Place (Jemal?) got some breaks if they put a museum in (as Jemal did for the Spy Museum location and as JPI did for the Balducci’s space). I’d imagine those breaks would have expired by now, but an AMW museum is still an odd choice in search of an explanation.

That building is required to have an “arts space” — the museum is probably within that heading.

Capital Fringe will be taking over the space on the corner next to Juan Valdez for a short period this summer to use as their ticket booth and a performance space.

There’s a .pdf of their menu available on the choptsalad.com website. A few comments on chowhound.com indicate their biggest problems are crowds and surly staff, so they’ll fit right into Gallery Place!

I am very excited to have a healthy takeout place nearby – what a great addition to the neighborhood.

I have been to Chopt in NY and it is great. I have always thought one would do well here. So excited!

I myself would have dug some Popeye’s fried chicken but I am excited about Chopt as well.

America’s Most Wanted museum? Really? It’s hard to see how garbage like that and the Spy “museum” can even pass muster to hold the museum moniker. Oh well, how soon until the Anna Nicole Smith museum is up and running?

anon 5:27 — haven’t heard that Tussaud’s is coming?

I can’t find any info on AMW museum. What is it? Does it exist anywhere else?

Comment by otavio_dc on February 10, 2007 @ 11:07 am

No problem GPL! You all have been doing a great job on the blog.

Hey, anon at 09:01, the producers of AMW will open a National Crime and Punishment Museum at Terrell Place, but the concept for the museum has not been finished yet, hence no information.

Oh wow, an America’s Most Wanted Museum! LOL. Whoever mentioned the future Anna Nicole Smith Museum knows this tourist market right. :-)

Logan Circle still wins. They have a Popeye’s near 14th and N around the corner from WholeFoods.

Looks like Vapiano is going take it’s time opening int the DC area. According to their website:

Vapiano is scheduled to open their Ballston location in February of 2007 with 18th and M, NW and Chinatown at the MCI Center locations opening in April and June

http://www.vapiano.us/location.html

I thought Ballston was going to be third rather than first. Go figure.

Hey anon at 04:17: Maybe waiting longer for Vapiano to open in DC means we will be treated to a much improved product! I certainly hope so!

Chopt is expected to open in Gallery Place by late spring or early summer, according to Norman Jemal. (WBJ)
