515 D St NW Plans Three More Stories

The latest Historic Preservation Review Board update lists the following case for consideration:
515 D Street, NW, HPA #09-144, concept/three-story rooftop addition
515 D St NW is an office building owned by the DC Gov. It is currently 3 stories, so it definitely has room to expand upwards. It should be interesting to see if any new design elements are added to the existing structure.

I’ve actually been inside this building; it’s a bit run down in its current shape. However, it is clearly a work of New Deal architecture featuring murals and other well-crafted décor in the lobby. That style itself is worth saving. That doesn’t mean it can’t integrate new, contemporary features. A courthouse just down the street is doing so at this moment.

That’s way too unambitious, especially considering how unattractive the base building is to begin with. They should do a 14-story building that matches the more modern structures in that neighborhood — either the glassy style of the Newseum and the new courthouse, or else the open, brick-and-stone style of the Clara Barton and the other area condos.
