We learned that tonight’s episode of My First Place on HGTV will feature Chris Chan looking for a condo in Chinatown. The show airs tonight at 8 pm Eastern time and here’s the blurb from the HGTV website:
For Chris Chan, buying a home in Chinatown would allow him to stay close to work in Washington D.C. and also stay connected to his heritage in a neighborhood he grew to love as a renter. After a long search in this expensive city and some tough negotiating, he finally gets a good deal on his dream condo. But surprise lending restrictions on new construction bring everything to a halt. For months, the only thing Chris can do is wait and wonder whether he’ll ever get to close on his first place.

Meh. Compare with the similar MFP ep in Philly with the young urban professional lawyer guy shopping in Northern Liberties / Fishtown… that ep was so much better – you saw more properties, got a better feel for the neighborhoods, AND the drama of an overbearing Mom rather than some generic friends whose main contribution was “don’t spend too much!”
IMHO the editing killed the episode. And they visited such an interesting property as Yale Steam Laundry and said not one word about its original purpose, just that it was an “awesome loft condo” or something similarly blah.
Plus, Chinatown Chris didn’t even buy in Chinatown!
The financing drama was an interesting twist, though. Unfortunately they didn’t say what kind of loan he was getting that would have such onerous requirements. I suspect it was FHA… oh well, take it to the real estate blogs, Richko…
I forgot if the final price was $575K or $585K but either way at 1300 ft2, that comes in between $440 and $450 per ft2 with parking and a 3% rebate. not an amazing deal but not outrageous compared to other new comps on the market (CityVista, Yale Steam), in my view.
Specs were: new 2 bd/2.5 bath, ~1300 ft2, 2 story loft with private rooftop deck, 2 balconies, 2 parking spaces at $575K (purchased in June 2009)
