Banner Over Gallery Place’s Bed Bath And Beyond, Hunh?
This one is a head-scratcher. Yesterday, a banner was installed stretching across 7th Street reading “Chinatown Welcomes Bed Bath And Beyond [obligitory Chinese script]” Since the store opened five months ago, we’re left wondering: Is business really that slow at BB&B?

Though I want them to succeed, I think they’re doomed for failure. It’s basically hidden away (you have to be looking for it to find it). The only time I’ve been there, it didn’t seem nearly as crowded as suburban BB&B’s I’ve been to (a good thing for the customer, bad for the store).
Has anyone noticed that the RadioShack seems to be without the Chinese script. Or am I just missing it? If so, it would seem to be the first store in Chinatown without the characters somewhere on the storefront.
From the times I’ve visited, the place is definitely not doing much business. IMHO they need to heavily advertise their delivery service – I think people w/out cars who are outrfitting their first apartments would flock there.
I wouldn’t say that BB&B is doomed for failure – they just need to be more creative about advertising their location (the banner may be part of that).
When the Mt. Vernon Triangle condos come online, there will easily be 2000 more residents a few blocks away looking for living necessities.
They need to advertise that you can also get shampoo, medicines, makeup, etc. there too! Much nicer than shopping for that stuff at sketchy CVS. And cheaper too!
If it’s not doing booming business, you can’t blame me. I’m in there multiple times a week!
If I go missing, check BB&B first!
Importantly, the place has AMAZINGLY GOOD customer service. The people that work there seem really nice and happy. If you ask where something is, they actually take you there to show you. Everyone says hi. Just the other day, I overheard two other people shopping there talking about how the service was so good there that they couldn’t believe it.
The drugstore section is fantastic. They have a lot of the stuff I would go to CVS for, at better prices, and some stuff that’s hard to find anywhere else (e.g. Essie nail polish and 100000 different kinds of shower gel). They also seem to stock travel sizes of every product known to humanity.
I was semi-joking with a cashier once about how all BB&B needed was a grocery section. She called over a manager type and he said they actually were trying to get a permit for selling eggs-and-milk type things. Wouldn’t that be awesome??
A friend of mine in 777 7th and I are always in there. Hmm, maybe we should get jobs there.
I also go there several times a week. It can get fairly busy on the weekends. They have been smart about what attracts people – e.g. less focus on huge furniture, and more on small personal items, as has been noted.
for some reason, they don’t have things that i want. . . like regular sponges or cocktail picks for olives. but they do have nice one-time purchases like fans, humidifiers, etc.
as for tacky banner comment . . . is it blocking your view of the crane or something? i don’t think the neighborhood has arrived to the point to where the banner is its most glaring aesthetic blemish. perhaps you are an Linen’N’Things shareholder?
It seems no less busy to me than the one in Pentagon City. And I am in there quite a bit. Although, I think they could do more to advertise their location. Once, near Rosa Mexicana, I had to give directions to someone who had just come out of City Sports, which is virtually right next door.
I’ve always thought that the size of the BB&B store was about right for a grocery store…bring on the milk, eggs and chocolate !
Oh my gawd, if BB&B started selling milk and eggs, I might soil myself. Maybe I should just direct deposit my paycheck to them and get it over with.
They need some sort of lighted sign above the entrance to draw attention to the store. I always thought that was coming, just hadn’t made it yet.
I agree, totally tack. This store also does not keep any of their wine glasses in stock and pushes you to order online.
Maybe some folks getting RSS feeds will get this… I know BBB wants our business, but early this morning (before 8 am on Saturday, August 5th) they had workers a cherry picker working on the sign. The truck was LOUD. What kind of neighbor does that on a Saturday morning?
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Maybe it was part of their agreement with the city and the city just got around to it. Everytime I go to BBB, they seem to be doing brisk business.
