Ledo Pizza Really Coming To Gallery Place/Mass Ave?

Posted by gpliving
May 29, 2006

Adam writes in to let us know about a development on Mass Ave:

Just this past week we noticed from the view out of our Meridian At Gallery Place windows that a banner has been hung on the front of the little lone building surrounded by construction pits on the 400 NW block of Mass Ave. It says “Coming Soon Ledo Pizza”. I have not heard of the restaurant before, but Google turns their website up, which includes mention of the Mass Ave. location. No idea on what their timeframe is.

The story behind the building and proposed pizza shop was first spotted by DCBubble at the end of this WaPo article, but we were still wondering if the owner of the building was serious about pizza. However, the store is now listed on the Ledo Pizza website as a “coming soon” location. We think there’s a good chance it may actually open!

I’d like to be excited about this but looking at the food options on the Ledo website… hmmmm… doesn’t look good. Has anyone eaten at a Ledo’s?

ledo is a dc area institution. its the barometer by which many locals gauge a pizza. the first one was/is on university blvd in PG.

personally, i can eat the stuff. in gallery place/penn quarter;
manhatten deli and matchbox on the opposing sides of the pizza world for me.

Ledo serves up the best pizza in town; just ask any one that lives near the Ledo outfits in Maryland. I am personally skeptical that the “lone house” on the block would become a Ledo outfit. The man who owns the house is an architect; how and to what extent would an architect be able to serve pizzas. Ledos is very demanding in the way they serve rectangular sized pizzas and very demanding on how the business is run. I should know – I lived in Annapolis before moving to DC and Ledos operates much differently from other pizza outfits. Time will tell.

Never heard of Ledos? You must be from out of town. Ledos has locations all over the DC area. It will be good to finally have a takeout pizza/Italian place within walking distance of Chinatown.

Some people really like the square pizza (myself included) and some aren’t so pysched about it. It never hurts to have variety, especially something different than the Dominos/Papa Johns/etc. pizza.

AV’s has been there for years! its only a block further from chinatown that the proposed ledo’s.

AV’s is closing.

Comment by Anonymous on May 30, 2006 @ 3:11 pm

I read somewhere that AV’s deal fell through and it’s staying around — at least for a while.

AV pizza cannot, by any stretch of imagination, be compared with Ledos. Both pizzas are great but done differently, very much so. There are moments that I crave pizza from AV and other moments that I long for a Ledo pizza

For all those who have never had Ledo’s Pizza – don’t set your expectations too high. I’ve lived here my whole life and never thought it was anything special.

Manhattan Deli has excellent pizza (and a good value), too bad they don’t deliver and their hours suck for residents of the neighborhood (closing in the early evening). IMHO, Ledo is among the many marginal restaurants that have somehow been allowed to survive in the region.
Just want to throw a question out there for people and generate some conversation: We have some great fine dining in our extended neighborhood, but what restaurant chains in our neighborhood do you dislike most – and wish ones do you wish would move in?

I’ve been to Camille’s a few times and while the food is ok, the service is awful. Everytime I’ve been, I feel like it’s the first time the employees have ever made whatever it is I order.

I love the new Qdoba and would like something like a Jamba Juice. But more than restaurants, we need a grocery store.

I think Ruby Tuesday’s is an absolute madhouse. And it seems dirty. Thereofore, I would not mind seeing that replaced with Two Amys (although I know we have 2 pizza places already) or a Houstons.

Comment by Scott on May 31, 2006 @ 6:06 pm

HOUSTONS!!!

Comment by Anonymous on May 31, 2006 @ 9:28 pm

Hands down, we want Houstons!

I would want to say goodbye to Ruby Tuesdays, too. I’d like to boot California Tortilla and bring in Baja Fresh. A Chick-fil-a instead of McDonalds. A jamba-juice would rock. And I think we all agree we need a diner or a delicatessan. Has anyone tried the new deli/buffet on Sixth Street by Avalon?

Comment by Anonymous on May 31, 2006 @ 10:09 pm

Hmm Houstons.. I heard all the hubub about it and went to the one in Rockville. Seemed more like an overpriced Lonestar Steakhouse with mediocre food and not so good customer service.

Now, something a little more reasonable and classy, Maggianos.

Or how about another southwestern/mexican food place. YUMMY!.. haha..

Just give me a decent grocery store and I’ll skip them all..

I agree about replacing McDonalds. The dirt in front of McDonalds is really disgusting and it seems to attract a lot of panhandlers. I would love to see a baja fresh on the block. However, given that Chipotle is owned by McDonalds, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

I have only had great service at Houstons in Rockville. The wait staff seems to work in unison, so you never have to wait long for drink refills or bill pickup.

Now, how about a pizza paradisio?

2 Amys. And they should sell slices at lunch.

Comment by Anonymous on June 1, 2006 @ 11:00 am

how about some NON CHAIN restaurants that help stop the homogenization of our city?

Comment by Anonymous on June 10, 2006 @ 8:02 am

Ledo pizza is bland pizza; not a fan. For slices right now go to Catus Catina. The best in local pizza is Vace’s (cleveland Park and bethesda). I would be happy with Panera Bread, Chicken-out, Labanese Tavenera Cafe and Carvel opening here.
