Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!
Penn Quarter – A very interesting editorial appears in this Sunday’s Washington Post about the FBI headquarters building echoing what we’ve been suggesting for some time. The FBI deserves a new, consolidated headquarters more suited to their mission and the neighborhood where they reside. This is not likely to be in downtown DC. [WaPo]
Mount Vernon Triangle – A great piece pointing out the changes to our closest and sometimes dysfunctional grocery store, the CityVista Safeway. The product placements have been rerigged and the beer/wine aisles were finally expanded and sized appropriately. We’ve noticed the positive changes and like the direction. You can air your views at this link! [The Triangle]
Penn Quarter – More interesting bits on the Meatballs restaurant (624-A E St NW) regarding the venture’s ownership. Kudos to the CityPaper for some good gumshoeing and local reporting. [Washington CityPaper]
Penn Quarter – We’ve been following the saga of the DC Central Library, the MLK Library, for some time. The Urban Land Institute comes up with its recommendations for the MLK Library at 9th and G St NW after interviewing a series of community stakeholders about their views of the Mies van der Rohe designed edifice and its community use. Downtown – The Old Post Office Pavilion (Pennsylvania Ave, between 11th and 12th St NW) redevelopment RFP decision has been pushed off by the GSA until early 2012. [WaPo]
Penn Quarter – The Downtown Holiday Market announces its run dates, December 2 to 23, on F St NW. [Downtown Holiday Market]
Penn Quarter – It looks like foodies will have another PQ restaurant to check out in December. Elisir plans to open for lunch on December 1 and dinner on December 3 at 427 11th St NW. [WaPo]

Interesting article about Meatballs. Everything about that place is sketchy – who owns it? The manager’s repeated apology for, but refusal to turn off, the illegally installed garish pink neon sign, their attempt to set tables and chairs on the sidewalk without a permit, and most of all, the not great food, which could not possibly be from Michel Richard’s kitchen. What’s up with this place? Who is behind it, why do they misrepresent Michel Richard’s role, and why don’t they follow regulations?
