Tinker Tailor… Donut Maker?
Earlier this week the Washington Business Journal noted that Dunkin’ Donuts is planning to open a store at 1200 G ST NW. We assume this means the Massachusetts based donut chain will be taking over at least of one of the recently vacated spaces we’ve noted on this blog, perhaps the tailor or the shoe repair shop (or both)?
We only recently tried the newest PQ donut shop, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken (1308 G ST NW), and couldn’t have been happier with the discovery. The Astro crème brûlée was one of the tastiest pastries we’ve ever had in downtown DC, and the fried chicken has finally filled the void created when Popeyes left our hood.
According to that WBJ article the 1200 G ST Dunkin’ Donuts will have 14 seats and a 48 person capacity. A more pressing question, however, is will they bake donuts in the shop, or have them delivered from a central bakery?

Yes, gone are another two local, neighborhood, shops – a tailor and a shoe repair shop. Although business could have declined in more recent years now that business casual is not just for Fridays in many offices, it is equally likely that the owners either retired voluntarily, could not sell the business because of lease conditions or lack of interest, or their lease expired and they could not afford the rental increases. Regardless, throughout the country, urban neighborhoods are loosing the convenient shops that dotted the urban landscape for centuries. These are often replaced by food emporiums, restaurants of all sorts, and fast food joints or by chain stores mainly selling clothing. In posh areas of select cities such as New York, Paris, London, and the like, streets formerly lined by independent shops (e.g., Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s upper east side) are not lined by designer boutiques.
It would be in the community’s long-term interest to frequent the neighborhood businesses who offer conveniently located services such as these two businesses did and 5th Street Hardware does or soon we will have to trek to other neighborhoods, perhaps even the suburbs, for these services!
