G Street Bike Lanes In PQ’s [Near] Future!
Thanks to the DC-DNA for forwarding us info on DDOT’s near-future plans on installing bicycle lanes on G Street, NW from 3rd Street to 15th Street!
The info is concise: The bicycle lanes will mean an additional white stripe between the parking stripes and the yellow center line. The five-foot wide lanes will include a symbol of a bicycle and an arrow pointing in the direction of travel.
According to the DDOT statement, the bike lanes will be installed in the next few weeks. Maybe it’s finally time to sign up for a SmartBike membership?

Tour Guide – Unfortunately I often do laugh at the “Bus” lanes. Great concept and I wish they were observed, but they have to be the least enforced traffic regulation in the entire city.
The Washcycle blog had a recent post on the 7th & 9th St bike lanes. I didn’t realize that the penalty for violating them was a big fat $0. So no wonder there is no enforcement!
Good step. G is of course nonexistent between 6th and 7th Streets NW due to the VZ Center / Gallery Place mall. But still better than nothing. I find the E Street bike lanes are quite handy, but you hit a nasty tangle when you get to the White House.
Good point Jeff (#3) I work on 9th Street between E and F Streets and the Pedicabs/Rickshaw drivers do their “return” (Northbound) trip on the sidewalk in front of my building. 9th Street is One-Way Southbound, but returning North is ringing the bell and yelling at the people on the sideway to “get out of my way”.

Wonderful news! Bike lanes are always good. Now we will have east/west lanes on both E and G streets.
Let us hope the next new lanes will be dedicated bike only north/south. We have 7th and 9th with the bus & bike only lanes. But honestly, riding a bike there is rather risky. I have never seen any enforcement of the lane restrictions. Besides, the bus is the biggest thing on the road and the bike is the smallest thing. Somehow we are to share?
