Metro Still Considering Relocation To Anacostia (and vacating 600 5th St NW)
The WMATA headquarters building at 600 5th St NW is one of those older office buildings that has found itself smack in the middle of a vibrant neighborhood. It occupies a half block without offering any ground floor retail. Not only is the architecture severely uninspiring, but it has nothing to offer the neighborhood residents and guests.
The sad thing is that the building is across the street from the Verizon Center on the west, the Building Museum on the east, several residential buildings to the north, and is diagonally located from the new Shakespeare theater. If this building weren’t owned by the DC government, it would have already been bought out and redeveloped.
The Examiner has an article explaining how WMATA is still considering relocating to Anacostia – just steps from that metro station.
We’re still waiting though – this idea has been proposed back in 2005.
