TenPenh Closing
The Passion Food Hospitality group, headed by Jeff Tunks, Gus DiMillo and David Wizenberg, announced that they will be closing TenPenh on June 30, 2011 due to unsuccessful lease renewal negotiations. Rather than relocating the Asian inspired restaurant to a new space, the group plans on focusing on its newer restaurants opening later this year in the West End (District Commons and Burger, Tap & Shake).

This is seriously disappointing news! This is my go-to lunch spot for nice, sit-down lunches, and a nice spot to take out of town guests for dinner. What a bummer!
This is sad — it seems as though a lot of great restaurants and shops in DC have closed down because of a breakdown in lease negotations. The DC Government should step up and address the tax breaks that let the landlord strong arm the tenants into paying obscene rents or closing down. One of my favorite stores in DC, Reiss, closed down because the landlord doubled the store’s rent (from $15K to $30K according to the sales associate). It seems like a similar situation occurred here for TenPehn.
The Landlords of 1001 are SICK! That’s why many renters are leaving that bldg because its highway robbery in there. TenPenh should take their restaurant elsewhere–they ware worth staying open. We have enough burger, fries and shake joints as it is.
OMG a new burger joint! JUST what DC needs. So sick of watching talented chefs and good restaurant groups flocking to this trend just because it’s high margin.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.

What a huge loss for the DC restaurant scene. TenPenh was one of my top restaurant choices in DC.
