By the way, I am very happy that the Greene Turtle is in the neighborhood. It is the only place within a few blocks of my Condo that has sit-down service with a good selection (including salads) for very reasonable prices. It’s not like I can go to a high end restaurant for every meal so I hope the Turtle does a good business and stays around.
Ate there last night. Food was tasty and the beer runs from Miller Lite up to some nice higher end beers like Magic Hat.
I agree with Jordan. I went to the Turtle and thought the food was good for the reasonable prices. It should be a good weekend lunch spot. The service however, was shaky. The waitress was more concerned with talking to other employees and then spilled a 22 oz drink all over the floor that nearly drenched a patron. No apology was uttered. While many of the staff might be first-time waiters/waitresses and just need to shake their training wheels, the management is just going to need to prevent this from becoming another example of horrendous DC service.
Didn’t Ward 2 Council Member Jack Evans break the law when he went behind closed doors, avoided a public ANC hearing, and got this place a liquor license for his buddies?
Why have ANC hearings at all? Let government officials do backroom deals for their friends and avoid public accountability and scrutiny.
amazing…
why is that everyone that has a negative comment is always anonymous???? just gets on my nerves..
xoxo
Oh, please don’t get me started on our ANC. If Jack Evans didn’t get this liquor license approved then we wouldn’t have this reasonably priced place to go. I hope it does a good business.
how is “suicide blonde” any less anonymous than “anonymous?”
We’ve been on a Sunday and it’s pretty dead. During the week, it’s getting pretty decent foot traffic. The food is pretty good, and I am happy to have a place that doesn’t break the bank.
It is sad that the ANC is not serving this SMD. We are lucky that CM Evans stepped in and took care of the license. What we need is an active effort to replace the SMD commissioner for this area. This means a candidate supported by heavy voter registration.
Agreed with DCDNA: given the dysfunctional ANC of which the Verizon Center is a part, we’re lucky to have committed councilmembers like Evans who make sure business still gets done. ANC’s aren’t intended to be the final word on neighborhood development (just an authoritative voice), so if they’re not doing their job, someone else has to step in. Empty storefronts in our economically vibrant city annoy me to no end.
Jason is correct. Jack Evans didn’t break any laws and I think he made the right call. In fact, ANC’s carry little political/legal power when it comes down to things:
“DC government agencies are required to give ANC positions “great weight” in their decisions. The vagueness of the term “great weight” is a cause of some frustration, but it means at least that the DC agency must: make its decision in writing, explicitly answer ANC arguments, and send a copy of the response to the ANC. The ANC’s voice is always heard, although it might not always be heeded.”
It’s good to know that Jack Evan’s didn’t break any laws or do anything that might lead to him losing his seat in the next election cycle. He’s a good Council Member and I’d hate to see him get defeated over such a small matter.
But if there is no need to have public hearings about liquor licenses and other permits, why doesn’t he just take over the role of our ANC and conduct it’s business himself, privately from his office or in public meetings he holds himself, until we can get some better ANC leaders? Seems like a no brainer.
Andy in PQ,
LOL! Right on! Identify yourself, suicide_blond! End this anonymity madness once and for all!
Also, on dcdna’s posting, what’s an SMD? Sounds like another Bush ploy. Ye gods!!
Anon: SMD = Single Member district. Penn Quarter is split between SMD 2C03 (Ward 2, single member district 3) and 6C09 (ward 6, SMD 9). ANC 2C03 is represented by Doris Brooks who lives north of NY Ave – hardly interested in what goes on “down here.”
This Doris Brooks?
Did anyone run against her in the last election? She doesn’t look that hard to beat. … When’s the next election?
Yes, John Tinpe from Gallery Place ran last year to be our ANC representative. I hope that he runs again next time. I will campaign for him, if he does. We need to encourage everyone in our neighborhood to register to vote. When we have thousands of registered voters in our neighborhood we will have more clout.
I saw the vote tally for the last ANC election and was shocked at how few people voted in that election. A few more votes could make a big difference next time around. If we could get a majority of the residents of our condo buildings to register to vote in DC, we’d be a huge political force to be reckoned with.
– CBD, registered to vote in DC (but in Ward 6, not Ward 2)
The last vote count for the ANC (Fall ’06) was something roughly like 300 votes for Doris Brooks and 200 or 250 for John Tinpe. I suspect with the increased residential population likely between Fall ’06 and Fall ’08 this may be her last term.
May: Actually, the tally was
315 BROOKS
131 TINPE
And, at the time, only the Ventana and Artisan weren’t fully occupied.
It comes down to a voter registration and voter turnout issue in our neighborhood. I’ve had a look at the voter registration for the condo buildings in Penn Quarter and it was horrible.. some buildings have around 15% registration.
