Trader Joe’s in Foggy Bottom – Update
dl004d sends us great news about the Trader Joe’s in Foggy Bottom.
As many know, Trader Joe’s is planning on opening a store at 24th and L Street NW, the former Columbia Hospital site.
Here is the info:
- The store was scheduled to open in late July, but the rain delayed some of the construction plans. It’s now set for August. The guy said he would be surprised if it had to get pushed back further than August.
The shopping there will have its own parking. No sign yet whether shoppers can get it validated.
It’s not close to Gallery Place/Penn Quarter, but it is close to the Foggy Bottom metro station. Just add it to the list of grocery stores that are 3-4 metro stops away from Gallery Place!

When I lived in Chicago, Whole Foods delivered in that same way – you had to go there and buy everything, then you just went home and your groceries showed up a few hours later. I’ve actually never checked to see if WF here does that.
I’ve also made the exciting discovery (took me a while :)) that the DC Circulator has a stop right in front of the Giant at 8th & O. I took the Circulator there and back home yesterday to get groceries.
I simply had wondered why couldn’t Trader Joe seize on the once-abandoned Balducci site. Can’t complain re these few metro stops (on Orange, not on Red).
Anon: Balducci’s still holds the lease and doesn’t have to give it up until the end of the year. So, Trader Joe’s (or anyone else) doesn’t have the possibility of seizing the space.
After all that, it looks like early September now. Meanwhile, there’s also rumors of another Trader Joe’s going in at 14th and V.
Thanks for staying on top of things! We drove by the 25th & L St location 2 days ago – other than the “Trader Joe’s Coming Soon” banner, it looked like there was a lot of work to be done yet.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Not only will it be fairly close to Gallery Place, but it may offer delivery in the future. For example, TJ’s new store in New York City offers delivery.
