Yesterday’s "Incident" At Gallery Place – The Real Scoop!
Many people were oblivious to the event (including myself), but yesterday at about 5:30am, police were taping off the area in front of the CVS at 7th & H St NW as well as portions of the escalators under the Gallery Place metro canopy.
Only four news outlets reported the incident, NBC4, W*USA9, WJLA, and DCist.com. NBC4 had the most descriptive article (with a video clip): “D.C. police said a stabbing victim was found in Chinatown near the corner of Seventh and H Streets, Northwest Wednesday morning.“
Rather than taking part in the hysteria, and after being burned a couple of times by inaccurate info, we decided to hold off a day and get the real scoop – giving MPD detectives a chance to compile their reports.
Here is what really happened – straight from MPD-1D Commander Groomes’ keyboard:
- “At approximately 0248 hours a male stated that he was trying buy some cellphones in the park at 6th and K [sic, I St] ST NW – and he fought the guy – he didn’t realize he was stabbed at the time thus he reported he used some drugs and later didn’t feel well and went into the metro station and asked for the fireboard around 0530 hours – it was then revealed that he was not punched but stabbed – – he does know his attacker and this is not a random attack -fyi“

fyi anc 6c02 commissioner dixon is checking on when fun fair video at 5th & i is going to be shut down. will post any info & that should help that area a lot.
Si: Thanks for keeping on top of fun fair. The future Mt. Vernon Triangle residents owe us some beer!
I understand, from our condo representive’s notes of the DNA meetings, that there are plans to install a camera at 6th and I to monitor that park. Yet this point hasn’t been verified. Does anyone know if there will be a camera?
As for what “really happened” . . . please. Do the facts make any sense to you? The guy “used drugs” (doesn’t sound like the medicinal kind) and we accept his story at face value? Oh, but he *does* know it happened at 2:48 am, so he couldn’t have been too jacked up.
I do take small comfort that this “wasn’t a random attack”, if we are willing to assume this guy could process a minimal dose of reality at the time.
Generally you can safely walk our neighborhood streets as long as you are alert. But there definitely are chemically dependent folks roaming our neighborhood and this heat isn’t helping their behavior. Extra caution is warranted.
dave: I don’t think we were given a timeline for the camera installation..
I do agree that one needs to try estimate the truth of what happened yesterday. Early news reports had this guy all over the place.. one news outlet had him saying that he was stabbed on the metro escalator.
The commander’s report gives us lots of new info that the news outlets didn’t provide us… like he was trying to buy cell phones at the 6th & I park. I mean, you couldn’t even *try* to make that up. I don’t really care what the exact time was when he tried to buy cell phones, but the new info is that he was high on some drugs – something not reported by the news.
So, the summary was that the guy tried to make a deal – a deal that went bad.. he was on drugs and didn’t realize he had been stabbed for some amount of time. Then he laid down in front of the CVS. That’s good enough info for me.
gpliving: I do agree he was obviously on drugs and was stabbed. and I guess the report gives enough info to be helpful. And I thank you for sharing this report on your blog.
I still question the location of the attack. Even the report seems confused if at 6th and I (park) or 6th and K (parking lot). To me, location is important since I live between H and I. Let’s just say I have firsthand cynicism about police reports in DC. But that inflammatory paragraph of mine earlier wasn’t necessary.
Again, thanks for avoiding rumors and providing the official report. I’m still not satisfied with that report, and will be extra cautious in this great neighborhood. I’m not ready for the Move du Jour just yet!
