700 6th St NW Office Building To Break Ground This Quarter
Thanks to Lafayette resident for posting a link to a Washington Business Journal article about the 700 6th St NW office building project. The article states that construction should begin this quarter!
Akridge was using the lot as a temporary parking lot for Verizon Center games. But, it looks like they’ve stopped doing that in recent days.

How are developers still allowed to build non-mixed-use buildings? Just what DC needs…another giant office lobby that benefits no one except the workers inside. Guess we can count out retail on that block for the next 50 years.
Chris, that’s an issue for the zoning board. Many large office blocks have to make concessions, such as the theater that will be a part of 505 9th Street (currently being built behind the Spy Museum) and the alleged grocery store in the Jefferson. But that section of 6th Street probably doesn’t have those restrictions.
Akridge is the developer that built the condo/retail/theater complex on 7th, as well as the adjoining office building with retail on H. This new building is being built over their pre-existing garage entrance on 6th. I’m sure that any requirement that they provide retail has been taken care of.
What theater will be going into 505 9th?
Anon: The Washington Stage Guild has leased 11,000 of the 16,000 sf of retail space. Here’s the reference.
I can’t believe I missed that one–thanks for the info! Penn Quarter is well on its way to becoming DC’s theater/arts district.

small edit: it should be 700 6th St NW
