Ovechkin: A 100 Pointer In Our Midst
A bright spot, of course, is number eight – Alex Ovechkin. Not since Mike Gartner and Denis Maruk graced the frozen pond at the Capital Centre in the ’80s have the Caps had a 100 pointer in their midst. We now have one in the form of the 6 foot 2 inch left winger who played for Dynamo Moscow in the Russian Super League. Ovechkin is a franchise player and a balanced scorer but with the worst plus-minus ratio, is he the backstop that prevents the Caps from being an outright door mat? Time will tell. One matter stands true, however, and it is that the Caps will have to figure out how to let fewer pucks in the net and win in overtime. Both accomplishments are always a team effort.

I went to the game last night, and although the Caps defense stunk the place up, Ovechkin was amazing. His first goal when the Caps were down 3-0 early in the 1st period was a thing of beauty.
I’m with Steve, check out these games with Ovechkin now while you can. Seats are plentiful, and the arena last night was shamefully empty.
For 10 dollars, its hard to find anything on a weeknight more entertaining. They also have a bunch of ticket promotions going on for the rest of the season.
there are some renderings for the new law enforcement museum here:

steve,
MOST games do not feel like an away game. The Flyers, the Pens, bring quite a few fans, and the Rangers bring a fair number.
Also, a significant portion of those road fans travel here from their home cities to see their team, its not necessarily transplants.
You are right about local media support though. It tends to be Redskins overkill sometimes.
anon,
Fair enough about the away games. Most of the ones I attend are usually regional foes, since those are the teams I know the best and since I am a Flyers fan, sad but true.
It doesn’t change the fact that most games have plenty of empty seats and it’s the best deal in town for a sports ticket.

I feel bad for the Caps. With so many people moving to DC and often bringing their hometown team affiliations with them, most games at the Verizon Center feel like an away game. They get little to none local support in the media either.
However, any hockey fan, serious or casual, should take the time to go see Ovechkin while they have the chance in DC, since he will be a Hall of Famer, whether they consider themselves to be a Caps fan or not.
