There Is Not A Moment To Be Lost!
Fans of Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series (aka Master & Commander) will recognize the famous words often spoke by Jack Aubrey (and less often by numerous other characters) throughout the popular books. Many of us rather than reading those words, might hear Simon Vance speaking them aloud, if you’ve listened to the Blackstone Audio series instead.
We started the series in print, but after a couple of books switched to the Vance read audiobooks and have never looked back. We also didn’t pay a penny for the privilege (DC taxes aside) because both the majority of the books and audiobooks are available at the DC Public Library (901 G ST NW).
We’ve mentioned the library’s download options many times, initially not available on Apple devices, then limited availability on all devices, and now a reasonably large collection on a variety of formats. We use our iPhone and have listened to almost the entire Aubrey/Maturin series over the last couple of years. Near the end of the series DC’s OverDrive was missing two books in a row (“The Wine-Dark Seas” and “The Commodore”) and we had to seek those elsewhere (Worcester County, MD public library).
We’ve used the DC system for more than just this Master & Commander series, however, listening to a wide range of books from classics, to mysteries like the Nero Wolfe series, period pieces such as Stone’s Fall, westerns, sci-fi, ghost stories, etc.
Audiobooks are not for everyone, but if you are interested and not aware, the DC Library has an enviable collection available to library patrons free of charge.
