Super-OverDrive!
We’ve already written (twice) about the audio book downloads at DC Public library. Both posts saw comments angry about the fact that these downloads were not iPod compatible. Well be angry no more, back in late June the DC Public Library announced that they now offer DRM free downloads!
This isn’t the entire collection, but they’re moving in that direction. So far more than 700 titles are available DRM free, for use on all portable media devices (compared with more than 4000 DRM titles in the system).
DC Public Library doesn’t get to choose to remove the DRM restrictions, it’s on a publisher by publisher basis. Lets hope that one day publishers & media companies will agree on a standard DRM format that allows everyone to play these titles, regardless of the device they’re playing them on.

I understand that complaint #1, but it seems that the publishers are only authorizing their materials under the MS DRM rights and MS operating system. Until the content publishers care about adding Apple users, there isn’t much DC (or any other) library can do.
What do the numbers look like for Mac users? Are they about 15% of home computers? If so I agree that’s a lot of users left out of programs like this, you would think publishers wouldn’t want to alienate such an audience.
Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Great. But it is still not Mac compatible. That leaves many residents out of luck — especially as more are “converting” over to Apple’s platforms. Oh well.
