The Source (By Wolfgang Puck) Satisfies (pic)
PQ Living reader Daniel let us know in October that Wolfgang Puck’s new restaurant, The Source, is a great addition to the neighborhood. I decided to check it out one night and couldn’t agree more. Read on to find out…
The Source is a taste of LA – with an entrance on 6th Street between Pennsylvania and C Street, the decor is strictly modern like the hulking parental Newseum that surrounds it. The lounge area on the ground floor is graced with a long communal table, separate tables and couches/comfy chairs along the glass wall looking out at 6th Street and C Street. Votive candles line the shelf along the glass walls (see photo above). The bar area is cozily sized – not cavernous, not tiny – seating just over a dozen patrons. I liked that there are three TVs above the bar but they aren’t huge screens that dominate the focus of the space. A two story wall of glass enclosed wine bottles escorts a stair case from the lounge to the main dining area; architecturally the wine wall is the real visual draw. Restrooms are one floor down – take the elevator or the stairs. The Source takes reservations using OpenTable but isn’t open for lunch yet.
The lounge menu features an assortment of plates divided into small, big, pizza/calzone and fun snacks. This writer tried the goat cheese and sausage pizza and it ranks as one of the best pizzas I’ve ever consumed. Perfectly cooked, the dough was not tough or chewy and the goat cheese was good company for the sausage. A glass of Four Vines Zinfandel was a great accompaniment. Other plates that looked good include the Kobe beef sliders and the crispy spring rolls. Dessert entailed ordering the warm chocolate purse, a chocolate cake wrapped with a stiff fried dough and a scoop of caramel ice cream. Not as good as the pizza but the coffee to go with it was fine.
For beverages, a good “wines by the glass” list is available with selections from under $10 to $25 per glass in each category – red, white and rose. Wines by the bottle stay in two or three digits so you won’t see the super, duper pricey stuff but there’s plenty of choices from all regions. A wide variety of classic and specialty cocktails are available too.
The Source’s lounge gets my thumbs up for happy hour, that first date, a pizza at the bar or whatever your casual finger food pleasure may be. Another post will be forthcoming once this writer tries dinner upstairs – he expects more of the same good stuff.

The Source is pretty good. My quick synopsis: I went for dinner upstairs there. The appetizers and main courses were good-to-excellent, but the desserts were misses. The prices are fairly expense but the portions are large and the quality is there. I didn’t like the room upstairs. The corner we were in was very dark. Overall a good addition to the neighborhood, but I found it had a bit of a touristy feel, but that is often what you get when star-chefs open up a new place in your town.
The pizza in the lounge was good, and their cocktail list has some good classics. It’d be nice if they had some entree-sized options other than pizza, but I suppose they may not want to “compete” with the restaurant upstairs. I also found the dessert disappointing.
we checked it out for dinner about two weeks ago. we sat upstairs and were surprised by the friendly service, not something you see a lot of in dc. not only were they competent (the waitress knew how to select wines, even if she was only going by ‘what most folks ordered’), but joked around a bit as well.
their tuna tartare appetizer is amazing.
if you have to decide between charlie palmer and the source, go ahead and Puck yourself, you won’t be sorry. :o)

I can’t wait to check this place out, great review!
