Summer Solstice, Almost

Posted by pqresident
June 30, 2008

We like the summer…a lot…because the days are long, the nights are short and the weather is warm. With summer thunderstorms wading in and out of the area due to unstable air masses, the sky makes for fabulous sunsets and this unaltered shot taken on June 22, one day after the summer solstice, is no [...]

PQ In The News

Posted by Columbo
June 29, 2008

A look at news from around the globe featuring parts of the Penn Quarter.
First, the San Francisco Chronicle has an article about the Old Post Office revitalization efforts, spurred on by a bill sponsored by our Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (the bill passed the House and has been sent to the Senate).  The revitalization could [...]

Sprung A Leak?

Posted by Columbo
June 28, 2008

Mrs. Columbo and I were enjoying Jazz in the Garden Friday night, when a little rain started to fall.  Not a big deal, Mrs. Columbo was prepared with an umbrella and we stayed huddled underneath nursing our beers.  Well that little bit of rain started falling harder & harder.
30 minutes later we saw some lightning & [...]

Balducci’s Deal Revived, Anthropologie In Talks For PQ!

Posted by gpliving
June 27, 2008

Thanks to Maisha for tipping us off to today’s WaBizJo article that discusses Douglas Development’s plans for reviving the Balducci’s deal on 7th (between D and E St) and bringing Anthropologie to the 900 block of F St!
Things sound very preliminary as none of the retailers or Douglas Development are saying much. But, the [...]

Hardware In The ‘Hood

Posted by pqresident
June 27, 2008

We wanted to be sure that it was a “go” before putting up this brief but the tips sent to the PQ Living mailbag combined with the press release on the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVT CID) website (that’s a mouthful!) confirms it. 5th Street Hardware will be opening soon at 1055 5th [...]

Public Art Or Public Nuisance?

Posted by Columbo
June 26, 2008

The old Waffle Shop site has been the site of much speculation, and a hangout for more than a few people. If you’ve paid attention though, you’ve noticed that the entrance to the old restaurant has been decorated numerous times over the last several months.  Sure it  may look like a random collection of garbage, [...]

Hard Rock Has Us Seeing Red

Posted by Columbo
June 25, 2008

The times they are a-changin’.  Last week Hard Rock Cafe took down their green awnings (bottom) and replaced them with new red ones (top).  We’re probably not in the target demographics for Hard Rock so we can’t say if all their restaurants used to be green, and now are red, or if DC was the [...]

Sound Off: Relocation Of DC To NYC Bus Loading Zones

Posted by gpliving
June 23, 2008

Many readers wrote in last week to let us know about how DDOT has relocated, or rather officially located, a loading zone for the various Chinatown buses, like DC2NY and BoltBus. The zone is designated as 10th & D St SW (near L’Enfant Plaza).
DDOT claims that the buses are congesting streets, disrupting transit and [...]
