Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!

Mount Vernon Triangle – The Sixth Engine restaurant, encased in the 400 Mass Ave condo building, serving American bistro fare begins construction. Photos available at the second link. [The Triangle 1] & [The Triangle 2]

Georgetown –  The M Street Barnes and Noble bookstore will be closing. Sad days as this is a great port in the storm to go to on M Street. We’re a bit surprised that a national book store would give up an anchor spot but those are the times. [Georgetown Metropolis] & [Washington CityPaper]

H Street NE – DC wants streetcars to be on H Street by 2013 and they have a plan. Or rather, they will have a plan. [WaPo]

Downtown – We Love DC lists out five eagerly waited restaurants. Elisir (11th St NW) and The Hamilton (14th St NW) are definitely on our list too. [We Love DC]

Penn Quarter – There was a stabbing at 7th and H St NW during a fight.  [WaPo]

Downtown – Do we need dedicated playgrounds downtown? This is the ‘for’ argument. [Greater Greater Washington]

Penn Quarter – The DC Shorts film festival runs from September 8 to 18. Penn Quarter screening venues include the E Street Cinema and the US Navy Memorial. [DC Shorts]

Downtown – The Old Ebbitt Grille’s Oyster Riot site is running and local artist Matt Sesow does the artistic honors. It’s hard to believe this is the 17th run of this party! [Oyster Riot website]

I’d like to know the opinion of other Penn Quarter readers/residents on the recent stabbing at 7th and H? Better yet, what is your opinion of the overall direction Chinatown has taken over the last few years?

Personally, I’m disturbed by it. I live here and work here. And over the past 2 years, I’d say, I’ve seen more and more troublesome issues arise. Frankly, I think the entire stretch along 7th from F St. to H St. has become one of the most undesirable strips in DC. I can’t even believe I’m saying that. Just last week I had a very uncomfortable situation occur. A large group of kids were walking up 7th. They were cursing at other kids in front of the McDonald’s. One, not looking, walked right into me. They were taking up the whole sidewalk, so I just stopped. Clearly she wasn’t watching where she was going. But she turned and proceeded to cuss me out. I mean, really??? I can’t even walk from work to the gym without being run into and cussed out. Lovely neighborhood we have here.

I find the stabbing disturbing. I remember a stabbing from about four or five years ago, but that seemed like we should be beyond that by now.

I had walked up to the see around 4:45 with my toddler. I am happy that everything was just roped off with police tape. But it would have been a nightmare to be out there with her when it happened. We generally avoid walking down this stretch of 7th Street and came out from the movie theater lobby.

I also wrote the letter regarding the playground featured on the Greater Greater Washington blog. Interesting to consider these two posts back to back. I guess walking around the neighborhood for exercise is not always the best idea.

my view is that the neighborhood went from being somewhat empty (it’s all relative) in 2005 to having serious teenager issues until Club Bounce was shut down in late 2008 to being vastly improved now. there are still teens that hang out but the situation is much better than it was in 2008 when the Mayor’s office responded to residents’ requests to act. don’t know much about the stabbing other than what was in the Post, but crime happens in all quadrants of DC. not saying it is to be tolerated.

I take a walk almost every day (sometimes during the day and sometimes during the night) and always feel safe. sometimes you do have to put on your urban “I mean business” face though.
