Here’s what we were reading recently about neighborhood news in DC. Have something to add? Leave it in the comments!

Ward 6/All Over DC – Tommy Wells, the Ward 6 Councilmember, formally announces that he is running for mayor in 2014 and kicked off his campaign. He’s the second person to formally announce his candidacy with the other being Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser. [Washington CityPaper] & [Wells for Mayor website]
Penn Quarter – Did you know that official flood maps show that a 100 year flood would put small part of Penn Quarter underwater? The floodwaters would follow the basic outline of the old Washington Canal (see map linked from article) and the contractor who is building the removable levee across 17th St NW just got replaced for running behind. [WaPo] & [Wikipedia Washington City Canal]
Penn Quarter – Douglas Development announces a few new retail tenants – IT’SUGAR (sugar and candy specialty shop) at 712 7th St NW (opening: August 2013), FrozenYo (soft serve frozen yogurt) at 714 7th St NW (opening: late summer 2013), and Jackpot Tavern (bar from Rocket Bar/Iron Horse owners) at 726 7th St NW underneath the now under construction Lime (opening: late summer 2013). [Chain Store Age]
Chinatown/Metro Center – Members of the Shout Out crew get six to nine year prison sentences for dastardly crimes committed since January of 2012, some of which took place in Chinatown and Metro Center. The beating of a man at the bus stop just outside the 7th and H St Gallery Place/Chinatown exit was described as particularly vicious. [U.S. Attorney’s Office webpage for DC – Dept. of Justice]
Downtown DC – The Downtown DC BID released its 2012 State of Downtown report and placed it for download off their website. The 2012 downtown residential population is shown at 8,500 residents. [2012 State of Downtown homepage]
Penn Quarter Crib of the Week – We’ve visited this week’s Crib of the Week floorplan many times and were jonesing after it when this building was but a developer’s drawing. This week’s installation is in the Sonata and is one of the “turret” units on the southeast corner of the building at 301 Massachusetts Ave NW. It’s Unit #603, has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a parking space – all filled with lots of natural light. It’s listed at 1,388 square feet for $724,900 under MLS number DC8030967. The census population may be 8,500 but we know that more people live here than are counted by the census. The Census allows one who is here temporarily to name their permanent residence and we know that in a number of apartment buildings and even in condos, people do not declare their Penn Quarter homes as their permanent residences. Some people are here on temporary assignment ranging from three months to three years. Others choose to declare a second home as their permanent residence wanting their vote to count for more than it does here both because of lack of equal representation and because DC is a one-party city-state.
These people eat out at restaurants, buy groceries and other sundries, and help to keep a thriving economy in Penn Quarter as much as do those who declare their permanent residency here.
