USDA Farmer’s Market Opens Tomorrow (12th and Independence SW)
We heard from the USDA’s (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Agricultural Marketing Service that their farmer’s market is starting the retail season tomorrow, June 7, at 9:45 am when Acting Agriculture Deputy Secretary Michael Scuse and Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Administrator Anne Alonzo will ring the opening bell. The market runs during the midday hours between 10 am and 2 pm at 12th St and Independence Ave SW and it’s been running for an amazing 17 year stretch. The 2013 season runs every Friday until November 22.

WASHINGTON, June 3, 2013 – Acting Agriculture Deputy Secretary Michael Scuse and Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) Administrator Anne Alonzo will ring the opening bell this Friday for the 18th season of the USDA Farmer Market. Many special guests, from the Columbia Heights Educational Center Band to a cookbook signing by the Beekman Boys, winners of the 2012 Amazing Race, will be present.
This year’s opening ceremony will celebrate farmers markets as a place for communities—rural and urban, farmer and consumer—to come together. From residents to tourists to the Federal workforce and other professionals, the activities planned will bring together all facets of the D.C. community to enjoy fresh produce and other goods from local farms. The USDA Farmers Market is part of USDA’s continued effort to encourage everyone to eat healthy and provide nationwide access to healthy foods every day via more than 7,800 farmers markets across the nation.
