Events/News

Downtown/Penn Quarter – The Taste of DC, a culinary event allowing festival goers to sample $1 to $3 bites from 70+ DC area restaurants, takes place on Saturday and Sunday this upcoming weekend on Pennsylvania Ave. The benefiting charity is Habitat for Humanity. [Taste of DC website] & [Taste of DC participating restaurants]

Penn Quarter – The Shakespeare Theatre Company announces a settlement with the Lansburgh to keep operating at the Lansburgh Theatre location (450 7th St NW) under successive 20 year leases. [Broadway World]

Penn Quarter – The Laramie Project, a play depicting the community’s response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man living in Laramie, Wyoming, will go on, but not at the Ford’s Theatre building which is closed due to the Federal shutdown. A free performance takes place tomorrow night at First Congregational United Church of Christ at 945 G St NW. Check the links for more details.  [WaPo] & [Ford’s Theatre]

Development

Downtown – CityCenter DC’s rental apartments are now available for lease. Move ins begin in November 2013 and amenities include a pool, two story fitness facility, and SkyBark (a “lively” rooftop dog walking area). Rents range from $2130/month for a studio to $7760/month for a three bedroom pad. [CityCenter apartment website] & [CityCenter apartment floorplans] & [Washington Business Journal focus piece]

Mount Vernon Triangle – The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVTCID) has a new website that chronicles events and development in the neighborhood. [MVT Website]

Downtown – The Washington Post offers up a piece on the renovation and revitalization of downtown DC. [WaPo]

Restaurants

Penn Quarter – We get an update for the Red Apron Butchery and the 709 D Street NW location in the former Union Hardware building it is now slated to open in November. Their endeavor will be mostly restaurant and part retail butchery. The name of the outlet will be “Parts and Labor” which seems appropriate given that the AAM (American Association of Manufacturing) occupies another floor in the same building. Ed Witt will be the chef at the new location. [WaPo]

Downtown – The J&G Steakhouse in the W Hotel (515 15th St NW) gets a revamp both upstairs in the restaurant and downstairs in the wine bar which is now called Bar 515, a favorite of ours for a cozy date night. [Eater DC (photos)] and [J&G Steakhouse website (menus)]

Chinatown – Industry Takeover Night takes place tonight at Graffiato (707 6th St NW) with Autism Speaks being the benefiting charity. [Graffiato website]

It’s 1,950 square feet in size and is in the historic portion of the Clara Barton. It even has a skylight! It’s MLS DC8190844, the asking price is $999,000, and the condo fee is $865 per month. I really hope that Red Apron doesn’t shaft the butcher in favor of the restaurant. We have plenty of restaurants in the area and in DC – what we seriously lack is a NY/Philly style butcher – with cuts made to order, premium prime grade meat, the occasional exotic meat, high quality pate’s and cured meats, people behind the counter who know what they are doing – Europe is filled with them. US has some good ones in major cities. DC needs to get with the times and I was hoping Red Apron would do it. However, it sounds like they may be going for the cheap buck by focusing on restaurant over niche butcher shop.
