10th Street Blues
Was it foolish of us to set ourselves up for disappointment? Probably, the information has been out there and we’ve been blogging about it for years. Still, we had high hopes that at the 11th hour someone with the power to make the change would realize that 10th Street NW, between H and NY Ave, shouldn’t be reopened to auto traffic.
But it’s going to be, and by the looks of things the other morning it might be soon. We had grand visions of 10th Street turning into something of a pedestrian mall. A bright, vibrant space for weekend and holiday markets, or other similar events. But that block of 10th Street which has been closed for so many years, is poised to soon allow two-way traffic; there will be no last-minute reprieve.
Now we know a lot of people will be happy to have 10th Street opened to auto traffic, and maybe this decision makes the most sense for the development and the city. Pedestrians, when that block of 10th Street does open, let’s be careful out there.

Disappointing. Was the final decision by the Council? Are they bound. & determined to make PQ as un-resident friendly as they can ? We have so few amenities and so little to make this a real n’hood/community. Of the candidates for Mayor, who is friendly to residential living? (I know who isn’t.)
@alpert @ggwash Hoping for some GGW thoughts on the (soon to be reopened 10th st NW ‘tween H and NY) http://t.co/H8ORvLtOnv
I’m a pedestrian, live a few blocks away, and have been looking forward to see 10th street being allowed to flow again. It makes sense.
From the plans, the pedestrian area will be the ‘alley’ between the buildings, where there will be cafes, restaurants and shops. That should be great.
I agree the street should reopen. Traffic gets blocked up and problems occur when we unnaturally disrupt the grid. The overall plan has a lot of open space and room for pedestrians. A closed street does not make for a vibrant neighborhood. Look at the Tech Center a block away (8th between H and I – a huge vacant plaza.)
