New Poll: Why Do You Read PQ Living?

Posted by pqresident
May 27, 2008

Our new poll asks why you read Penn Quarter Living as we’re trying to figure out who comes to our site and why. Please cast your vote in the new poll box along the right hand column.

For the last poll, we asked our reader community “Which new sit down PQ restaurant do you like the best?” and here are the results from the 198 votes cast:

(1) Haven’t tried any of them – 89 votes – 45.0%

(2) The Source (555 Pennsylvania Ave, NW) – 46 votes – 23.2%

(3) Asia Nine (915 E St, NW) – 43 votes – 21.7%

(4) LeeLoo Lounge (521 G St, NW) – 14 votes – 2.7%

(5) Didn’t like any of them – 6 votes – 1.8%

Almost half of our voters have not visited one of the three restaurants listed. That’s a shame because they all have their good points. The Source and Asia Nine duked it out for first and essentially tied with LeeLoo coming in next.

Thanks for voting and for reading!!!

Just because half of the respondents haven’t tried places listed as options on the last poll doesn’t mean there are NOT good points about them. People stay away for various reasons.

Some people prefer to cook. Others travel so much they just prefer to stay in when in DC. Still others may simply think it is not a good value for what you pay–especially compared with some of the other places in the area. For example, Bisto D’OC is probably the best place for your $$ in this entire area. I would eat there every day of the week before even walking into the Source.

Speaking of good places to eat, anyone know why Jaleo had their liquor license suspended? I walked past this morning and saw the bright ABRA poster in the window. I hope Jose can get it back asap! There’s nothing better than sangria in summer.

I agree with “Chef”. There are alot of restaurants in DC. We often choose to eat away from Penn Quarter for two reasons:
better priced and less crowded restaurants are in other parts of the city.

We also like to cook at home because it is healthier and more relaxing.

I didn’t really think it was a big deal that readers hadn’t tried a lot of the places.

They have only been open a little while and there are tons of other restaurants around.

Roger that on the prices and crowds, #3-PQ anon.

Thanks for the comments.

#2 – are you sure it was suspended? All estabilishments that hold a license have to apply for renewal every three years. Could just be that.

Comment by Andy in PQ on May 27, 2008 @ 7:21 pm

Yep. It was a big yellow poster, different from the renewal signs. It was definitely not good.

Comment by pqresident on May 27, 2008 @ 8:40 pm

I took a closer look at the yellow sign on the way home from work today. it is a liquor license suspension from May 26 to May 29 as dictated by city code 25-828. see below…that section of the code doesn’t give a reason for the suspension nor did the prominently displayed yellow sign. plenty of patrons inside enjoying diet cokes and tapas though.

§ 25-828. Notice of suspension or revocation

(a) If the Board orders the suspension or revocation of a license, the Board shall post a notice in a conspicuous place at or near the main street entrance of the outside of the establishment.

(b) The posted notice shall state that the license has been suspended, the period of the suspension, and that the suspension is ordered because of a violation of this title or of the regulations promulgated under this title.

re: Jaleo – looks like there was a hearing a few weeks ago. They may have served someone underage or something like that.

regarding the new poll – you should have another option for people who live near PQ – I live in Shaw and love to read PQ Living as I am so close to all the wonderful things to do and see in PQ.

Comment by DG-rad on May 28, 2008 @ 11:28 am

I read it mostly for development news — new buildings, new restaurants, new urban design elements, transportation things (bike racks, etc). I live in Anacostia so don’t spend a whole lot of time in PQ, unless I am going to the NBM or Verizon Center.

PS everyone should go to the Cibola Farms (buffalo meat) stand at the PQ Farmers Market because my brother works it.

Unfortunately, many of the restaurants in PQ are tourist or “bridge and tunnel” traps or “big night out” places. Solid, reasonably priced options are few and far between.

As for The Source, IMO it’s not worth the $$$$ prices.

Penn Qtr had a good streak going of new restuarants opening with sidewalk seating which added to vitality of neighborhood. Most of the new places have no outside seating. Whats the deal? F St could develop into a special shopping experience with a few outdoor cafes ala Paris so M&S starts the trend but COCO did not follow up.
