Who Is Buying Walnut’s Eye Street Parcel?
Earlier this year we followed the 5th and Eye St parcel bidding contest among four developers but the hubbub died down as the winner announcement date kept getting pushed back. Supposedly, it’s now August 18. In an interesting development, DC MUD (Metro Urban Diary) is reporting that Walnut Street Development, owner of 443-459 Eye St, NW, which is adjacent to the 5th and Eye corner, is under contract with a mystery purchaser for the parcel. The extra tidbit is that each of the four bidders was asked to submit another “best and final” by yesterday, August 8. Who could that purchaser be?

Re-reading your differentiation on August 8 vs 18th you might be right. I heard the BaFo was moved to August 18th but I was give that information on July 15th. These dates are often in flux. Perhaps the plan now is to have the BaFo on August 8th and the award on August 18th. If so, great! I’m all for knowing sooner!

Re: AUG 18
Word I got directly from one developer is that after community response the city informed applicants that improvement of the triangle park and of 5th street are priorities. The city asked that all final responses explain how they the developers plan to improve those 2 areas. The August 18th date is the date for these Best and Final Offers (BaFO). The Deputy Mayor’s office will evaluate these new final offers and make their decision. I’m unclear how long that evaluation will take.
RE: WSD Parcels
I attended several of the 5th and Eye meetings including the public presentation and the ANC 6C special meeting. Through listening to the developer speak at these engagements I’ve always been under the impression JBG had the Walnut Street lots in their back pockets. I don’t think DCMud’s formalizing the news changes the landscape much.
Rather than rehash all my thoughts entirely – here is the link to my post yesterday at The Triangle.
