The USDA is seeking DDOT’s approval to close 12th Street, SW between Independence Avenue and Jefferson Drive. DC Street Light Task Force request to have DDOT use healthier LED lights than now planned
DDOT will be converting current street lights to energy efficient LED lights. However, according to the Street Light Task Force, DDOT is converting to a potentially harmful LED light rather than one that is not harmful or not as harmful. The AMA has raised concerns about the blue light that these LEDs emit. To date, DDOT has only installed cool-white LEDs that have a strong blue-wavelength component and produce a harsh, bluish-white light. The American Medical Association has warned that blue-rich LED street lights cause hazardous glare and are potentially harmful to human health because of their disruptive effect on circadian sleep cycles. The AMA recommends that cities install warm-white LEDs that produce the “lowest emission of blue light possible.” The draft I received does not indicate what the Street Light Taks Force is requesting, if anything, of the ANC. 1. DDOT Penn Quarter/Chinatown Multimodal Value Pricing Pilot Project: Third parking meter rate adjustment.
Within the area bounded by 3rd, 11th, E, and H streets, NW. The pilot aims to reduce time need to find parking, improve turnover of spaces in high demand, offer incentive to use parking space in low demand, reduce congestion and encourage to use other modes of transportation.
