The Good Times Are Killing Me

savor

We woke up this morning with bleary eyes and a heavy head.  It took a couple of pieces of burnt toast and several cups of black coffee before we felt good enough to put this post together.  But just like last year, it was worth it.  Despite the high price and (once again) terrible food, Savor was fantastic.  The food complaint is a small one to us though; while it is billed as a food and beer event let’s be honest, we’re not there for the food.

The Building Museum was a beautiful location for the event; easy to navigate and never more than a few minutes wait for the brewers at each table.  The layout was significantly improved from last year, each square table held four brewers with plenty of room between each grouping.  Perhaps the best improvement was the addition of water pitchers and buckets to empty your tastings, one of our biggest complaints from last year.

We certainly hope the Brewers Association continues to improve and promote Savor.  While we’re not fans of the food, it was still very popular for the majority of those in attendance.  Especially the cheese table & the oyster bar, both of which had long lines the entire night.

Our favorite brewer from last year, Henryk Orlik of Heiner Brau was again in attendance, we made his table our first and last stops of the night.  It’s the brewers like Henryk who make Savor such a worthwhile event.

I was apprehensive that cramming everyone into one session this year would result in overcrowding and long lines. Not the case. Great event once again. And once again, I disagree with your take on the food.

I had that same fear pqnonymous; we arrived a little after 8 pm as I didn’t feel like waiting in line to get in when the doors first opened. We were pleased to find that there was plenty of room for everyone.

I thought even the brewers dropped the pretense that this was a food & beer event. Last year the brewers kept telling me to try x beer with x food. This year not one of them told me to try any of the food with their beer. They were all talkative and friendly, they just didn’t bring up the food when talking about their beers.

Again for me it’s a small complaint, and perhaps the majority like the food offerings. I just knew this year to eat first, and that made the event much more enjoyable.

that’s a sterling photo!

Columbo has heard me rant endlessly about this, but it’s a point worth making again: the food was atrocious. I say so, Columbo says so, and a number of the brewers I talked to say so. To bill Savor as a food and beer event is a laugh. The garbage the caterers slopped out at the brewers’ tables looked terrible and tasted terrible. I had a good time at the event — as I did last year — but the poor quality of the food (save the bounty of cheese brought by the folks from Wisconsin) remains a knock on an otherwise great event. The Brewers Association should either change caterers or drop the food angle all together.
