City Council Box at RFK
At a charity auction in PQ several months back, this blogger snagged seats to watch the Nats in the DC Council Box at RFK. Made it to a recent Sunday game, despite the constant rain, here’s a brief report on the box:
- Excellent view of the field, just off of the press box, on the 1st base line;
- 60 to 70 seats, in 3 rows, of roughly 20 seats each;
- Mini Fridge with beer (bud, bud light), sodas, water, etc.;
- Sausage rotisserie with a variety of dogs & sausages;
- Chaffing dish with hot snacks;
- Salad, chips, pretzels, peanuts, and desserts.
There were only 6 to 10 people in the box (it was a really miserable day); around the 3rd inning Council Member Tommy Wells showed up, I believe he was the only Council Member to make it (I don’t know them all by sight though).
For an old stadium, it’s a pretty nice box. You have to walk a plank from the main concourse to the boxes, which is kind of fun. The abundance of food & drink makes for a more laid back game (and who can complain about a more private bathroom). It would be interesting to see if the box is packed when the weather is nicer, or to see what some of the other boxes at RFK are like.

True enough RR 446.
I tell you I really wish the new stadium were going in one of the downtown locations initially being considered. But that’s just my selfishness at wanting everything close by. It will be fun to have a park near the water.
Did you get these seats at Weschler’s Penn Quarter auction? If so I’d like to pass this link on to Jim Graham who donated the seats.
That in fact was the auction. We blogged about it at the time as well.
In fact I emailed CM Graham after the game to thank him again & to tell him to give CM Wells a hard time about his foul ball reflexes (Wells, for the record, didn’t get the ball but also didn’t spill his beer).
Could someone explain this to me? Why does the City Council have their own box at RFK. Perhaps I’ve misunderstood. Please tell me this is not for the personal use of City Council members. B/c if so, W.T.F.?
I have no problem with the Council having a box. I am wondering though, about your description of “60-70 seats”. In one box alone? They must be very different from boxes in some of the newer stadiums (RFK, etc) to hold that many seats.
Anon 6:29, I didn’t count the seats, just went on base numbers. There were 3 rows of about an equal number of seats. The seats were numbered, starting around 5 or 6 for some reason, and going up to the mid 20’s. The front row is lower than the top two rows. I was in the middle row and could not see the seat numbers on the top row. It’s a good size box, but I don’t think 60 to 70 seats was over-stating it.
