High Rise Life: Taking Out Fido Or Fifi

Posted by pqresident
October 19, 2009

Many high rise dwellers keep pets in their homes but the lack of a yard precludes them from swinging open the kitchen door and ushering Fido or Fifi into nature’s water closet for their requisite breaks. What’s the upside? There is no lawn to mow. What’s the downside? It’s mandatory that Fido or Fifi go on a walk although maybe it’s an upside because pet owners get some exercise too and they get to meet other pet owners in the neighborhood. Enter the leash, the grocery store plastic bag and the 20 minute walk to get Fido or Fifi out to take care of business. PQ Living has taken on the subject of pet friendly restaurants and pet friendly retail in downtown DC. We now want to know about where you take your pets on walks.

What are the best routes to go on for walks with pets downtown? What are the best parks for pets downtown? Have you met any high rise neighbors on your walks?

(Please remember our comment policy when leaving a comment.)

P.S. We are adding Art and Soul (415 New Jersey Ave NW) to the pet friendly list of restaurants after checking out their Puppy Patio menu.

I do a Building Museum loop. It is a nicely timed 20 minute walk that allows me to meet owners from the neighboring buildings.

The Building Museum is great for dog walks, and yes, I recognize lots of regulars.

I usually walk my lads down to the patch of green by the Navy Memorial in the morning, and after work we take a more leisurely stroll up to Mt. Vernon Square, maybe up through Shaw a bit if the weather is nice (and on the weekends all the way to the dog park at 11th & R).

We usually stop by the Navy Memorial “8th Street Vista” and the grass behing the Penn Quarter Metro Stop. Sometimes we only have time to circle the FBI building. On nicer days, we walk around the DOJ building and to The Mall as well.

We usually take our pup to the Building Museum or in the courtyard of the DC Courts complex. We’ll go to the Mall if we have some extra time. Since we live in the V at CityVista, though, weekdays we tend to walk her to the Historical Society or Gompers Park. Weekend mornings we definitely go to the new dog park at 17th & S in Dupont as she has a meet-up with other Basenji pups. That place is amazing.

i try to keep pups walk interesting by NOT going the same route…. we have assorted routes that lead down to the mall, navy memorial, fallen law enforcement memorial/metro stop, up to wagtime on 9th… there is a fun iphone app called “Map my walk”… it maps our route, tells us our time distance and avg speed every five min or so… keeps it fun AND makes sure no one gets “short changed” when we mix up the route! added bonus we discover allll sorts of things/people …the ONLY sure thing…is that we try to AVOID 7th between G and H …and yeah …the three to six miles that we walk is generally more for me than the pup :-)…

I see that the pet-friendly restaurant comments are closed, but I wanted to comment that Austin Grill is VERY pet-friendly, and always bring out bowls of water.

As far as walks, we sometimes do the Building Museum loop, but we also just head down 7th street quickly to the Mall. So many squirrels to wrangle up trees, so little time!

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
