Cuba Libre Getting Closer (801 9th St NW)
UPDATE (June 2010): Cuba Libre Restaurant’s opening is now looking like September 2010.
We’ve been following Cuba Libre, the Cuban themed restaurant with locations in Philadelphia, Orlando and Atlantic City, since this time last year when news surfaced in DC that they signed a lease for the space at the corner of 9th and H Streets NW (801 9th St NW). The most recent online update we’ve seen for Cuba Libre is this Zagat Buzz post from early April of this year. We noticed that they set up their business office on 9th St NW in the building housing TG Cigars and a recent help wanted posting on Craigslist advertising a job fair in early April indicated an opening in June of 2010 (images after the break).
Our intelligence network is saying July 2010 is more likely for the opening of the 200-seat restaurant and our observation of construction progress bears that out. Regardless, it won’t be long before tasty Cuban inspired cuisine – food and drink and dare we say it, dancing – will be within walking distance of residents, workers and visitors to the Penn Quarter. Mojitos anyone?

I’ve been to the one in Atlantic City — a little “Disneynified” but the food/mojitos were GREAT. Also loved the fried plaintains.
I have been to Cuba Libre in Philly several times and it is so far one of my favorite Cuban restaurants. It is very authentic, the food is great! I cant wait to go to the one In DC!

I can’t wait. I’m Cuban-American, and I have a tough time finding good Cuban food in the District.
