Howto: Getting Free Food (Almost)
With the economy slowing down, we can all use a little pick me up involving some green. This Howto: won’t save you thousands of bucks but you might get a Jackson’s ($20) worth over a month’s time. Today we’re talking about those frequent (insert your favorite food chain or beverage spot here) eater cards. We started a list below for the Penn Quarter…maybe readers have a few downtown favorites we haven’t mentioned?
Bruegger’s (E St NW between 9th and 10th) – Buy 6 coffees at this bagel & sandwich shop and get the 7th free.
Nando’s Peri Peri (819 7th St NW) – A more complicated rewards card where you get a stamp when you spend more than $7.50 at a sitting. You get progressively more expensive awards as the number of stamps climbs. At 2 stamps, get a yogurt. At 5 stamps, get olives or nuts. At 7 stamps, get a regular side. The grandaddy award comes at 9 stamps…you get a free combo meal.
Chop’t Salad Company (730 7th St NW & 618 12th St NW) – Buy 9 salads or sandwiches and get the 10th free.
California Tortilla (728 7th St NW) – The CT Burrito Elito reward card counts each dollar you spend. At $50, you get 5 Burrito Bucks to buy food which works out to be a 10% discount. The website also says they’ll randomly double the points for a transaction or give you free tacos.

On The Fly has a “Frequent Flyer Kard” — 10 purchases and the 11th one is free. Obviously, this works better for those of us around during the daytime when they’re across from Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro and just west of the Chinatown gates…
Starbucks !!finally!! started a discount card for the true addicts. you have to pay $25 for the pretty black & gold card but it gets you 10% off everything. tis a lot of crack juice to recoup the fee unless you have a pricey 7 name habit, then you can make it back & then some in no time! you can also put money on the card and pay with it.
this is not food, but 5th street hardware has some sort of card where you rack up rewards & coupons. no signup fee at all.
Tangysweet has a Buy 10, Get 1 Free (med with 3 toppings) card from the Dupont location. I’m hoping the PQ locale will honor that card so I can stay in the neighborhood.

Of these the only one I use on a regular basis is the Brugger’s coffee card. I probably only get coffee out once or twice a week, but it doesn’t take long (when you’re buying two cups at a time) to get to that free cup.
